Poll: Majority Says War in Iraq a Mistake

By The Associated Press
The Associated Press
Friday, June 24, 2005; 2:47 PM

-- Just over half of Americans, 53 percent, now say the war in Iraq was a mistake _ the highest percentage to say that in AP-Ipsos polling since December 2003, when two-thirds said the war in Iraq was the right thing to do.

The poll taken earlier this week also found that almost six in 10 disapprove of the Bush administration's conduct of the war, but about the same number say they would prefer keeping troops until the situation is stable instead of immediately withdrawing them from Iraq.

Some other findings:

_Who most favors the war: Suburban men, Republicans.

_Who is most opposed: Those 65 and older, people living in urban areas, unmarried women, those who make less than $25,000 a year, Catholics and Democrats.

2. That wording is pretty weak.
It wasn't a 'mistake', it was a deliberate, illegal war based on purely evil lies.

And why don't those 'Suburban men' toddle off to Iraq if they think it's right? AND send their kids? Oh, that's right - other people die for their beliefs.

But I still like the numbers.

6. True
But that's what happens when people (including us on DU) buy this jive that Neocons are "stupid". Then malicious agendas become "mistakes".

16. They ARE stupid. They thought that this would actually work out well.
The fact that they have a malicious agenda doesn't change the fact that they're stupid.

As for the word 'mistake,' it's the only word that works. Otherwise, people would get hung up on whether there was malicious intent, or whether or not it was 'right,' or whatever other phrasing you used. 'Mistake' is the most effective phrasing for finding out what they question is intended to find out--how many people think that invading Iraq was the wrong thing to do. If you asked someone whether they thought Iraq was a deliberate illegal war based on purely evil lies, 80% of them would say no.

23. Not really.
You think they wanted to lose their mandate, fail to extract the oil, and tie down the military? They expected to be in Iran by now. It may be profitable for Halliburton, but I doubt that it's lived up to their original plans of Empire.

25. It most certainly didn't live up to the original PNAC plans.
Iraq was supposed to be a cakewalk. They were supposed to be basking in a glut of oil by now, with military bases firmly established in Iraq, Iran, Afghanistan and Syria, with Sauron's eyes on Lebanon, Libya and Saudi Arabia.

5. I hate that word "mistake"
Just seems to soften it too much. It was a hateful, illegal aggression that was conceived out of such evil intentions that it was bound to fail. And our soldiers are paying the price.

The greater the mistake the greater the evil.

7. And this is with an ill informed populace
If the numerous deceptions outright lies and obfuscations were known I'd like to think the american populace despite its mushy grey matter would truly get in the streets in their own home towns to protest as they watch the decay of their local infrastructure and think of were their tax dollars are going and who they are going to.

9. Their new spin is shocking.
On my favorite Jazz channel this morning, ( a station which I believe was overtaken by Clear Channel), this woman reported that, yes, the reasons for going into Iraq may have been fuzzy, but most Americans believe it would be immoral to abandon Iraq now and withdraw. WTF?

13. Bahhhh...just another fringe focus group.
American majority = fringe focus group, said bush.

World majority = fringe focus groups, said bush.

Too bad the "fringe focus groups" weren't heeded BEFORE tens of thousands of dead and maimed bodies and world hatred and $300 billion...and counting.

18. Will be interesting to see how Americans feel after the "new" Abu Ghraib..
pics and videos are released.

If these pics and videos, that are reportedly even more horrifying US torture pics of women being raped & children being sodomized at Abu Ghraib, don't make Americans opinions about this whole fiasco tank down the tubes... I have serious doubts that anything will.
