Dean: Democrats Must Cultivate Hispanics
---------------------------------
Location: SAN JUAN, Puerto Rico

---------------------------------
SAN JUAN, Puerto Rico (AP) - The Democratic Party is losing more and more Hispanic voters to the Republicans and must cultivate them if it is to win the 2008 presidential victory, Democratic Party leader Howard Dean told Latino officials on Friday. More than 7 million Latinos - of Central and South American, Mexican, and Puerto Rican descent - voted in the 2004 presidential race.

(snip)

To win Latinos back, "We need a 50-state strategy," Dean told several hundred elected and appointed Hispanic officials belonging to the National Association of Latino Officials.

"We want you to come to us and tell us what we need to do to win in your communities," Dean said.

(snip)

Democrats lost Hispanic votes in the last election because the Republican Party presented itself as the party of "moral values," said Dean, 56.

But "this (Democratic) party stands for social and economic justice," he said, criticizing the Bush administration's health, education, and social security policies.

"We are Democrats because of our moral values," he said.

3. I've never heard the word cultivate when referring to an ethnic group....
Edited on Fri Jun-24-05 05:47 PM by dhinojosa
but I'll allow it. With all of the Chimp's foul ups, I believe Dean can mispronounce, misuse, misspell, and just all out butcher the Enlgish language for the next 50 years...

7. Oh, hey, check out these hispanics......
They are looking nice. Sure a little yellow on the edges, but so far so good. Just some more water and they'll be ready for '08!

8. That's good. There was a lot of complaining
after the last election from the Hispanic community about how the Democrats did such a poor job at outreach.

I just read through it twice. Never once does the article give the quote where he supposedly said 'cultivate.'

Last night on Jon's Show he said that the republicans were a "Culture of Corruption" and everyone seemed to like it.

14. Cultivate?
I have heard this phrase used many times. It may be kind of a country thing. I am going to cultivate his friendship etc. Sounds fine to me, of course I think the Doc walks on water. May not be a top 10 concern for me, sorry.

18. Hispanics, by and large, should be Democrats.
If there was ever a group with a history of repression by corporate greed, it's them. And African-Americans. And Irish/Catholics. And others. I'm of Irish descent. We haven't been oppressed in this country for several generations, but those who came long before me were. And they made damned sure that those of us who came after never trusted "the man", and never forgave them, and sure as hell never threw in with them! So I'm always left cold by suggestions that Democrats need to reach out to those who should be at the front of the line leading the charge. But I understand it. I have two sisters who have abandoned their heritage and joined the dark side. It happens.

19. Tell us what kind of party you want us to be! Tell us!
And then we'll just expect our traditional liberal constituency to vote for us!

Er, guess again, doc. We've been telling you loudly for years: we're sick of GOP-lite.

But your "moral values" fluff is looking increasingly like McMorals.
