Senators Propose Tax Credit To Help Unemployed Buy Health Insurance

Two senators are proposing to help unemployed workers purchase health insurance by expanding a tax credit already in effect for people who lost their jobs because their employers were harmed by foreign trade.

Republican Charles Grassley of Iowa and Democrat Max Baucus of Montana, leaders of the Senate Finance Committee, acknowledge their plan would only make a small dent in the number of people without health insurance — an estimated 43.6 million last year.

"Is it perfect policy? No. Does it solve the problem of the uninsured? It does not," Grassley said. "But it's an important step in the right direction."

Under their plan, the federal government would pay nearly two-thirds the cost of health insurance for unemployed workers by expanding the tax credit already in place for people whose employers lost business due to competition from imports or moved their manufacturing operations overseas. The Treasury Department estimates 200,000 people are eligible for that credit.

4. I thought unemployment was federally tax free..how to credit against

nothing? Will there be a rebate? This is the kind of 'tax credit' for the poor that does nothing for the poor, but makes the repukes look like they are attempting to remedy the situation...more rhetoric and no solutions!

Most states--I believe--that have income taxes, don't tax unemployment.

8. Let's see ....

You get laid-off, your net monthly income drops by at least 50% if not more. You have little to no savings. You have mortgage, car, credit card, and insurance payments. Utilities, food and all those other living expenses.

A tax credit won't put food on the table now. It might help in april cuz it might help them pay the federal income tax they will owe on their unemployment income.
