Casino Mogul Steve Wynn interview what happened Tiger and Roy
Edited on Thu Oct-09-03 05:22 PM by rmpalmer
Moderators - this headline was so generic I tried to stay close while explaining story.

http://klastv.com/Global/story.asp?S=1475112&nav=168XIQs2

<snip>

Wynn said for sure that Montecore did not attack Roy Horn. He said that reports that Roy was attacked are false. That Montecore would never attack Roy. That in a way, the tiger was trying to protect him following a string of unfortunate events that led to the tiger carrying Roy of stage as if he were a cub.

Steve Wynn speaks of the information he gathered from talking to people on the scene:

As Roy was leading Montecore out to stage front on a leash, the cat became fascinated and distracted by woman with a big hairdo who was sitting ringside. Instead of Montecore going down facing forward with Roy, he did a 90 degree turn and faces sideways towards the woman with the big hairdo. For whatever reason, Montecore is fascinated and distracted.

Montecore got down on all fours and puts his 26-inch head four inches away from of the woman. She thinks this is adorable and part of the show and reaches out to try and rub him under his chin. Roy is talking and sees this move. That's way wrong all the way around. As usual this heroic fellow that he is, Roy jumps between the tiger and the woman.

At that point Roy tried to re-gain the tiger's attention by pulling back on the leash and saying, "No, no, no, no. Come on, get up". As if to say, "No, I'm not ready to do what you want me to do yet, " the cat does not respond. Roy continued to command him.

1. If that is what happened
why did he (Wynn) tell the 200+ workers of the act to go find another job and the show is dead.

2. The are now un-insurable
for all practical purposes.
If that cat had wanted to kill him, he would be dead.

3. Uhh, probably because
Roy Horn is still in the Hospital in critical condition from a stroke and probably won't be performing for some time, if ever.

4. On larry King his partner said the cat bit Roy's sleeve...Roy said no..
then fell backwards...they (staff) ran over to him...the cat acted like it was protecting Roy from these events, grabbed him around the throat and dragged him backstage where the cat dropped him.

6. Seigfriend said the same thing on Larry King
Once backstage the tiger dropped him and let him lie there.

I believe them. If the tiger wanted to kill Roy, it would have.

7. Accidents happen, that's why they're called accidents.
S&R performed for decades without a single incident. How many people are killed each year in the USA by "domesticated" animals like dogs?

I'm channel surfing last night and happened upon John (?) My-Dad-Did-Great-Things-As-A-Lawyer-But-I'm-A-Hack-Left-Over-From-The-OJ-Debacle Abrahms. He had some other Vegas entertainer who also works with big cats on his show, and he was asking if the entire industry should now be shut down because it was too dangerous. Wha? If we're going to shut down dangerous industries, say goodbye to ever eating seafood again (most dangerous job on the planet? commercial ocean fisherman).

It reminds me of what happened with the Concorde. The Concorde never had a fatal crash until that one firey crash a few years ago. They stopped flying for a year, made some design changes, put 'em back in service, and now they've retired them altogether. Other airplanes crash all the time. In fact, the Concorde crashed because its tire hit a piece of equipment that fell off one of those other airplanes and exploded, sending the tire into the engine where it caused an explosion and fire!

Have the other airplanes been grounded? Nope. But the Concorde's now out of business (for sake of argument, I am laying aside the negative impact the Concorde had on the environment).

So, I don't think is a reason to shut down anything. I live in Vegas, and in the past 3 months, we've had a pedestrian electrocuted on a sidewalk (she stepped on a grating during a rainstorm. The grating had made contact with some exposed wires), a helicopter crashed in the Grand Canyon on a sightseeing tour (7 dead), a 6-year-old drowned in the pool at The Flamingo, and numerous people have lost their lives in traffic accidents and domestic violence cases.

We should let the show go on (though I doubt that Roy will ever recover to the point where he can do the show).
