President Bush told Americans today that the situation in Iraq is "a lot better than you probably think," as he sought to rally the flagging support for the U.S. occupation.

In twin speeches here in New Hampshire, the president kicked off an effort to revive determination to remain in Iraq, saying "Americans are not the running kind."

Bush's speech fell on one of the more violent days in Iraq; an attack on a police station killed eight, a Spanish diplomat was slain and another American soldier was killed in an attack on a convoy. Bush did not directly acknowledge those setbacks, but implicitly acknowledged the difficulties and their toll on his own standing.

20. Interesting choice of words

"a lot better than you probably think". What exactly does he mean here? I assume here he means I think it's terrible over there. Or, maybe that's what I probably think. Either way, he wants to reassure me that whatever I'm thinking about Iraq, it's a lot better.

Notice the choice of word 'think'. That lends a very subjective quality to it: well, people can think just about anything. That's not the same as facts. If we see something on TV or read about it, then that's more in line with reality. (or so we hope).

The FACTS are that Iraq has become a Dante's Inferno. Americans are still dying. Iraqis are dying in greater numbers. Of course, we don't get to see much footage of Iraq because the media controls what Americans can see. If we were hooked up Al-Jazeera, the picture would be quite different.

So he's quite wrong. He has no idea what we WOULD think, if we had the right sources.
