Bloodshed, relentless violence and insurgency taint news bulletins from Iraq, yet amid this violence Christian Aid partners continue their vital humanitarian work.
More than 900 people, mostly Iraqis, have died in insurgent attacks across the country since the Shiite and Kurdish-dominated government of Prime Minister Ibrahim Jafaari came to power six weeks ago. Car bombings, explosions and ambushes have sent the death toll sky-high.
On June 14 at least 22 people, mostly pensioners and civil servants queuing for their salaries and pensions, were killed and 50 others wounded in a suicide bombing in the city of Kirkuk, a centre for ethnic rivalry.
This latest attack comes after two months of a growing death count – approximately 364 civilians were killed in April this year. snip
Thousands of Iraqi civilians have died as a result of the conflict and its aftermath. It is likely that a number of civilian deaths have not been catalogued, but Iraqi government sources have counted more than 25,000.
What are we doing with all the dead bodies?
