DAMASCUS, Syria, A Syrian delegation will travel to Iraq to begin procedures to reopen the Syrian Embassy in Baghdad after a 23-year break in diplomatic ties, the official news agency reported Monday.
The delegation, which departs Tuesday, will also conduct talks with Iraqi officials on "all obstacles that hinder the developing of bilateral relations in all fields," SANA reported.
Syria broke formal relations with Baghdad in 1982 after accusing Iraq of inciting riots by the banned Muslim Brotherhood in Syria. The two countries maintain interest sections in the Algerian embassies in each other's capitals.
Syrian Foreign Minister Farouk al-Sharaa has said the delegation would also ask the Iraqi government to provide evidence of would-be insurgents infiltrating across the Syrian-Iraqi border, as has been claimed by Iraqi and American officials.
