Va. Governor Injured in Tumble off Bicycle

RICHMOND, June 27 -- Virginia Gov. Mark R. Warner was injured today when he fell off a bicycle during a biking tour in Lexington, Va.

Warner, 50, broke two bones in his right hand, said Kevin Hall, Warner's press secretary. He spent two hours at Stonewall Jackson Hospital in Lexington where he was also treated of several other minor injuries, including scrapes. Hall said Warner was wearing a helmet, and he did not hit his head.

Hall added that Warner remained conscious during the entire episode, including the ride to the hospital. By mid-afternoon, Warner was on his way back to the Medical College of Virginia in Richmond to see a specialist about the broken bones in his hand.

Warner was participating in the 18th Annual Bike Virginia Valley Byways Tour in Rockbridge County in the Shenandoah Valley, along with more than 2,000 other cyclists, according to a press release sent out by Warner's office last week.

Because some voters, for reasons beyond me, consider it a plus that a candidate be athletic, they all want to appear athletic. Maybe that it sends a signal that they are healthy.

Although Kerry was far far more athletic than Bush, playing 4 sports in college and still participating in long bike races (Boston to Cape Cod) versus being a cheerleader and repeatedly falling on his face from his bike (?!), I doubt it changed even one vote.

I was an NCAA volleyball player and broke my thumb playing a stupid game of backyard volleyball at a fraternity party. (No, I wasn't drunk -- mildly hungover maybe.) Of course, this was in Lexington too. Maybe it's something about Virginia. ;)

Well if you're going to go on a bike tour in Virgina, Lexington is a beautiful place to do it. I'm not sure I'd recommend falling though.
