US soldier killed by Iraq suicide bomber

BAGHDAD (AFP) - A US soldier was killed by a suicide bomber near Balad, north of Baghdad.


The soldier died "when a suicide vehicle-borne improvised explosive device detonated near a coalition forces base," the US military said in a statement Tuesday, adding that a second soldier was being treated for wounds suffered in the blast.

The attack occurred near a coalition military base in Balad, 50 miles north of the capital. The soldier belonged to Task Force Liberty, but the military withheld identification pending notification of relatives. The wounded soldier had non-life threatening wounds and was take to a military hospital.
