Russian Says Gitmo Guards Defiled Quran

A Russian formerly held at Guantanamo Bay prison said Tuesday that U.S. guards there regularly desecrated the Quran by putting it into a toilet.

"In Cuba, they used to throw the Quran in the toilet bowl. This happened regularly and was intended to provoke us," Airat Vakhitov said at a news conference.

Vakhitov is one of seven Russians who were released from Guantanamo in 2004 and returned to Russia. He and the six others were held in Russia for three months, then released a year ago.

Vakhitov said he previously had been held by U.S. forces at Kandahar in Afghanistan, where many detainees were held before being sent to Guantanamo, and that he also saw Quran desecration there.

2. Extreme American nationalists,
who comprise nearly half the population and always will, have no regard for the truth on issues such as this. They will always desperately cling to the lies their wrapped-in-the-flag leaders tell them. The bigger the lie, the better.

As Goering said, "It is the same in any country." Type his name and that quote into a search engine and you'll find the full quote.

Furthermore, the Christian extremists who dominate the military do not believe 'desecrating' something they do not regard as sacred anyhow to be a bad thing.

It does seem to fly in the face of the Golden Rule, but this brand of Christianity is not big on the GR oe any of the numerous favorable references to 'peace' and 'love' found in the Gospels and elsewhere inthe New Testament.

I call them "Old Testament Christians." They're all about 'smiting' and 'condemning.'

3. That is a salient point
James Michener wrote about something similar in the book - The Covenant. That book was about South Africa but one of the themes of it was how the white Afrikaners (I may have this word wrong) who settled the area viewed themselves as the "chosen people". In essence, though they were Christian, they identified themselves more with the teachings and history of the Old Testament rather then the new. This rationalizing allowed them to do what was right for them to be successful in their new world as opposed to doing what the bible actually says.

I always think about that when I here Christians use references from the Old Testament to contradict the teachings of Jesus in the new.

What I find interesting about the Koran desecration and other torture issues is how conservatives (particularly the talking heads) will defend it on the one hand and deny it on the other. For example, many will say that if it saves American lives then we should do it. Then they say that we don't do it, we treat them with supreme respect and dignity. Well which is it that they think is best.

I find that a common thread with Republicans is that they like to talk about leadership and personal responsibility but prefer to be lead by someone else and told what to do. Thus the party of moral values is made up of many people who want someone to tell them what those moral values are, and as long as it doesn't affect their bottom line then those values are OK.

Sorry for the rant, didn't mean to go on that long.
