Clark May Give Dean a Run for His Money (WP - Cali fundraising)
http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/articles/A5814-2003Oct9.html

Interesting excerpt:

In what many California activists described as a significant development, Eli Broad, a businessman and major philanthropist of the arts and education in the state and nationally, is supporting Clark and indicated he is likely to raise money for him. Broad, the activists said, gives Clark access to the California business community, which is substantially more moderate than the liberal entertainment community.

Broad, in an interview, said he does not want an official fundraising role in the campaign, but "I'll be helpful to Wes Clark," whom he described as "clearly the most capable in the areas of foreign policy and domestic security."

2. Hate to tell ya
"gives Clark access to the California business community, which is substantially more moderate than the liberal entertainment community.

I think that we're finding out that the supposed 'hotbed of liberalism' of the Hollywood media set is much more of an illusion than what 'conventional wisdom' woud lead us to believe.

Money and position trumps principle, so it would seem...

4. September CA Field Poll: Dean:23%, Lib:15%, Kerry:11%, Gep:8%, Clark:4%
9/17/2003 #2093: Dean is now the clear front-runner in California's Democratic presidential primary. Bush runs about even against each of the leading Democratic contenders.

Despite early fundraising success, Clark has a long way to go to become fully competitive with Dean. Dean broke Democratic records for fundraising in a single quarter with $14.8 million at the start of the year, and led in the second quarter with $7.6 million.

5. That poll was released on September 17...
... the day Clark officially entered the race. The poll was conducted September 3-7, before it was certain Clark would enter the race.

It's an interesting poll, but I'd like to see more recent figures from California.

Clark 19%, Dean 14%.

I can't find a link other than this, but I remember seeing the poll as well.

10. Go for it. Here is the CA Field Poll's website & recent nat'l gallup poll
http://field.com/fieldpollonline/subscribers/

Note, the national Gallup poll has Dean with the momentum and Clark ahead but static. This tells me that Dean has most likely gained more ground in California and/or elsewhere.

10/6-8
Clark: 21
Dean: 16

9/19-21
Clark: 22
Dean: 13

9/8-10:
Clark: 10
Dean: 14

12. WOW! Now THAT Is SPIN!

I called you on your false claim and proved you wrong. You unapologetically transition to a weak bootstrapping attempt, trying to push a square national poll peg (which, by the way, has INCREDIBLY TELLING demographics information in favor of Clark, which I'll again post here shortly) into a round state hole.

Keep it up, though! It's really amusing.

DTH

On Edit: Here's the demographic info:

South:
Clark 25%
Dean 8%

Income less than $20,000:
Clark 26%
Dean 5%

Age 65+:
Clark 32%
Dean 9%

Men:
Clark 29%
Dean 17%

Blacks:
Clark 15%
Dean 7%

Moderates:
Clark 24%
Dean 11%

Conservatives:
Clark 23%
Dean 7%

West:
Clark 23%
Dean 22%

Income over $75,000:
Clark 25%
Dean 26%

Liberals:
Clark 18%
Dean 24%

13. Wow, you two went bonkers while I went to verify. Yours is a gallup poll.
Edited on Fri Oct-10-03 01:44 AM by w4rma
So, using a national gallup poll is even better to compare with yours than with the CA Field Poll I provided. I stand by my analysis. Dean still has the momentum. Clark has undergone the name-recognition effect, like Lieberman did, and his polling numbers have stablized. I do expect Clark's polling numbers to rise, but at a slower rate than Dean's polling numbers.

WOODRUFF: Checking in on the Democratic presidential hopefuls, Wesley Clark has surged to the front in a new CNN-"USA Today"-Gallup poll of registered Democrats in California. The retired general got 19 percent, Howard Dean 15 percent and Joe Lieberman 14 percent. All the other candidates were in single digits.

9. Broad is what we will call a strong friend of Israel.
The wording of this tells you why he's supporting Clark. Again, the only thing I dislike about Clark is that he is totally owned on the issue of Israel, just like Clinton was. I was hoping he would show more backbone than Clinton did, but I have to admit, my confidence is dwindling.

Broad, in an interview, said he does not want an official fundraising role in the campaign, but "I'll be helpful to Wes Clark," whom he described as "clearly the most capable in the areas of foreign policy and domestic security."

14. Supporters of Clark will be signing up for ME wars on behalf of Israel
for the next three generations. This is precisely why I can't support Clark. Just another AIPAC shill.

15. Since Clark can't win the Dem base from Dean, he'll court the Dem
plutocrats that are deserting Kerry, Lieberman, and Edwards. That fits with Clark's Repuke sympathies.
