Plan will not pass legal challenges, lawmakers claim

WASHINGTON --Texas Democratic lawmakers said Thursday they plan to run in their congressional districts in 2004, with no plans to move, relocate or change tactics, because the GOP redistricting map is "dead on arrival" once it reaches the courts.

House Majority Leader Tom DeLay, R-Sugar Land, was in Austin this week to break a deadlock in discussions on finishing the map in the Texas Legislature.

At the same time, the Texas Democratic delegation to Congress was going about its normal business, staunchly opposing redistricting while predicting they will prevail in future legal challenges to the GOP-drawn map.

Several Texas Democrats dismissed the possibility of having to run from the newly configured districts, saying it's not conceivable the new lines will survive legal scrutiny.

8. Right now, it's wishful thinking....

The fellow running against DeLay in 2002 was sincere, decent, apparently hard-working, and he got pretty well stomped. At this moment, only someone crazier than DeLay could take his seat away from him, and who would want that?

He's fought tooth and nail against high-speed rail to the south of Houston, because he knows that would change the demographics of his district and could conceivably affect his electability. He's not stupid, but he is crazy.

In DeLay's case, I believe the quote from a former lieutenant governor of Texas applies (speaking of the Texas legislature): "If you think these people are crazy, you should see some of their constituents."

I agree--for the foreseeable future, I don't see DeLay leaving Congress unless he goes feet first. Better to work for an overall change in the House--he'd not be able to do nearly as much damage as House Minority Leader.

Dems thought Bush was going to be trashed. Dems were sure 2002 was a win waiting to happen. Dems really, really thought Arnold was going to walk away sad. Might want to dump the defective 8-ball, realize the deck is stacked, and start taking these things seriously.

Guess what Texas Democrats? It's now likely that we will have NO VOICE in selecting the Democratic nominee for president since the Republicans moved our primary date to March 9. I'll repeat that because it sounds vaguely important.
