Army reverses series of recruitment shortfalls

PENTAGON After months of declining enlistment, the Army has more than met its recruitment goals for the month of June.

Joint Chiefs of Staff Chairman Richard Myers announced the turnaround during a "town hall" meeting this afternoon at the Pentagon.

Myers did not provide numbers, nor did he indicate how far above the recruitment target the enlistment number is.

Going into the month of June, the Army had failed to meet its recruitment goals for four consecutive months. Officials blame a strong economy and the continuing carnage in Iraq.

Just last night, during his speech on the situation in Iraq, President Bush urged Americans to consider joining one of the service branches during this time of war.

It took ten days into June before the Pentagon had the guts to publish its disastrous May results.

The Pentagon can lie all it wants. If the boots aren`t filled, they aren`t filled. Unless Rummy can produce a magic wand, he`s up shit creek.

Edited on Wed Jun-29-05 02:03 PM by Stand and Fight
How low did they lower their quotas and standards before they met said goals?

Secondly, part of this can be attributed to the graduating classes of 2005 enlisting for up to $40,000...

21. Plus universities hiking tuition...
TAMU announced today a 12% increase, Prairie View A&M: up 20%; University of Texas and U of Houston: up 5%. Tuition alone, before fees, is exceeding $2,000 a semester, putting it out of reach of many high school graduates.
These were all announced today, I believe.

28. HE'LL MAKE MILLIONS FROM DYNCORP
AS A MAJOR DOMO IN THE COMPANY

CSC/ DynCorp

The world's premier rent-a-cop business runs the security show in Afghanistan, Iraq, and the US-Mexico border. They also run the coca crop-dusting business in Colombia, and occasional sex trafficking sorties in Bosnia. But what can you expect from a bunch of mercenaries?

CEO: Paul V. Lombardi
Military contracts 2004: $2.4 billion

note: CSC sold DynCorp in January 2005

LINK TO THE HOODLUM CORPORATION EXPOSE.

http://www.corpwatch.org/article.php?list=type&type=18

The U.S. State Department awarded DynCorp a multimillion-dollar contract to advise the Iraqi government on setting up effective law enforcement, judicial and correctional agencies. DynCorp will arrange for up to 1,000 U.S. civilian law enforcement experts to travel to Iraq to help locals "assess threats to public order" and mentor personnel at the municipal, provincial and national levels. The company will also provide any logistical or technical support necessary for this peacekeeping project. DynCorp estimates it could recoup up to $50 million for the first year of the contract.

Already armed DynCorp employees make up the core of the police force in Bosnia. DynCorp troops protect Afghan president Hamid Karzai, while DynCorp planes and pilots fly the defoliation missions over the coca crops in Colombia. Back home in the United States Dyncorp is in charge of the border posts between the US and Mexico, many of the Pentagon's weapons-testing ranges and the entire Air Force One fleet of presidential planes and helicopters. The company also reviews security clearance applications of military and civilian personnel for the
Navy.

What's more, Kathryn Bolkovac, a U.N. International Police Force monitor filed a lawsuit in Britain in 2001 against DynCorp for firing her after she reported that Dyncorp police trainers in Bosnia were paying for prostitutes and participating in sex trafficking. Many of the Dyncorp employees were forced to resign under suspicion of illegal activity. But none were prosecuted, since they enjoy immunity from prosecution in Bosnia.

Army misses recruiting goal again

Thursday, June 9, 2005 Posted: 10:35 AM EDT (1435 GMT)

WASHINGTON (AP) -- The Army appears likely to fall short of its full-year recruiting goal for the first time since 1999, raising longer-term questions about a military embroiled in its first protracted wars since switching from the draft to a volunteer force 32 years ago.

Many young people and their parents have grown more wary of Army service because of the likelihood of being dispatched on combat tours to Iraq or Afghanistan, opinion polls show. U.S. troops are dying at a rate of two a day in Iraq, more than two years after President Bush declared that major combat operations had ended.

The Army says today's economy offers attractive alternatives to many high school and college graduates.

The recruiting statistics appear to bear that out. Officials said Wednesday that although the Army will not release its numbers until Friday, it fell about 25 percent short of its target of signing up 6,700 recruits in May. The gap would have been even wider but for the fact that the military lowered the target by 1,350.

The Army said it lowered the May target to "adjust for changing market conditions," knowing that the difference will have to be made up in the months ahead.

along with the names of students. Who is going to what college. Who is going to into the work force. Who is going into the Military. Other districts in the area also do the same.

For 3 years in a row, those entering the Military has been ZERO, out of a class of approximately 600 graduating high school students.

http://www.albionmonitor.com/0503a/armyrecruitresistance.html

<snip>For instance, most students don't know that:

Two-thirds of recruits don't get any college money, according to the Central Committee for Conscientious Objectors.

Most people in the military do not have time to attend college while in the service.

To qualify for college money recruits have to pay $100 per month for a year.

The unemployment rate for veterans is three times higher than the national average.

People who sign up with the Delayed Entry Program are told they can't change their minds, but getting out is as simple as writing a letter.

The enlistment contract is for eight years.

There are other ways to finance college, like federal financial aid, private scholarships, going to community college or joining AmeriCorps.

47. This link has numbers...
The Army's goal for its active-duty force June was 5,650 recruits; so far, more than 6,150 signed up, the officials said, citing preliminary statistics from recruiting stations.

The Army Reserve hoped to sign up 3,610; it has barely exceeded that goal, the officials said.

There were no figures available for the Army National Guard, which is also well behind its annual goal.

The active-duty Army is still 7,800 recruits behind its year-to-date goal. The service hoped to recruit 80,000 into its ranks between Oct. 1, 2004, and this Sept. 30.

51. Wondering....
If the numbers include those re-enlisting and those "straight off the block" civilians combined?
Top officials also say that Army retention is at or exceeding goals, suggesting that those who have been to Iraq or Afghanistan want to stay in the military to finish the job there.
http://www.guardian.co.uk/worldlatest/story/0,1280,-5107474,00.html
...And how those re-enlisting are really enlisting, or just not allowed to leave "due to national emergency?" Stop-loss variety.
'Cause that might mean they need fewer new guys - if the veterans aren't going anywhere.

The active-duty Army is still 7,800 recruits behind its year-to-date goal. The service hoped to recruit 80,000 into its ranks between Oct. 1, 2004, and this Sept. 30.

61. Yeah, after changing the targets
Then, he won't give numbers anyway, of goals or recruitment. More neo-con lying, but technically telling the truth.

They were going to start counting them before they get there by including the delayed enlistment numbers.

There were many calls for all the young chickenhawks to put their asses where their mouths are, and presto! all of a sudden we don't need any more soldiers.

75. They're just trying to stem the "Nobody else is enlisting so I'm not
enlisting," landslide. What they don't know is people are really saying, "I'm not going to fight this bullshit war." PR won't fix this problem.

77. It must be the banner ad they put on FR.com that put 'em over the top.
That, and the surge of Young Repubs leaving business school to enlist.

Army Recruiting Up in June
<http://www.military.com/NewsContent/0,13319,FL_army_063005,00.html>

QUOTES:

Through June 27, the Army had recruited 47,121 new soldiers in 2005. That's more than 7,800 below the number it needed to be on track to meet its goal for the fiscal year, which ends Sept.30.

The Army's success in June can be partly attributed to modest expectations. The June 2005 goal was more than 1,000 recruits lower than the June 2004 goal.

...snip...

The June numbers, while an improvement over the four previous months, also were not anywhere near the 8,086 recruits the Army brought in during January. That's despite offering enlistments as short as 15 months and bonuses as high as $20,000 for some who join.

June's recruiting numbers look good if people don't realize the Army is still going to miss its annual goal, said Loren Thompson, a military analyst at the Lexington Institute in Arlington, Va.

Hey...if you can't meet your numbers, lower the goal and pretend that you did!

81. related: Army may have trouble getting recruits
http://www.duluthsuperior.com/mld/duluthsuperior/news/politics/12025996.htm

WASHINGTON - The Army, already likely to miss its recruiting goal this year, may have even more trouble filling its ranks next year, the service's chief of staff said Thursday.

"We've got enormous challenges," Gen. Peter Schoomaker told the Senate Armed Services Committee.

In written testimony, he said the Army's goal of 80,000 recruits this year "is at serious risk," and recruiting woes will stretch "well into the future." Next year, he wrote, "may be the toughest recruiting environment ever."

Schoomaker's testimony came a day after officials said the Army met its recruiting goal for June after four months of shortfalls.

Despite that progress, the active-duty Army is still 7,800 recruits behind its year-to-date goal. The service hoped to recruit 80,000 into its ranks between Oct. 1, 2004, and this Sept. 30.

They're not going to meet their goals. It's all part of the lie - part and parcel from the cloth this administration sews.
