US troops killed in Iraqi Shia strongholdFriday 10 October 2003Two US soldiers have been killed and four others wounded in an ambush by suspected resistance fighters in Baghdad's Sadr City.
The US military said on Friday the soldiers were from the 1st Armoured Division and the attack happened on Thursday at 1700 GMT.
A Shia militia said earlier it had lost at least one of its men in a shootout with US troops on Thursday night in the teeming neighbourhood.
Nine people were killed in Sadr City in a car bomb explosion at a police station hours earlier.
The location of the latest anti-US attacks is significant because it may signify that the Shia are abandoning their non-aggression stance towards the occupying powers.
