Jay Leno is biting back at critics who claim he's become the late-night cuddle-toy of Arnold Schwarzenegger and President Bush.

Political and media analysts yesterday took shots at the lantern-jawed comic - contending that Leno helped elect Schwarzenegger as California's governor by putting him on "The Tonight Show."

...But Leno spokesman Bruce Bobbins insisted yesterday that the comedian never endorsed the Terminator.

"They're just longtime friends," Bobbins told us after speaking with Leno. "He never had Arnold on during the campaign. He also booked Gray Davis as a guest. " Bobbins also denied that Leno was leaning right to score more bucks as an emcee.

He sucked up to Arnold for the same reason most of the rest of the press did: Because Arnold brought ratings. Ratings are the bottom line (except on MSNBC); if Gary Coleman had been the big news story, the press would have followed him.

What bothers me more is the increasing likelihood that Schwarzenegger won because a few million voters thought it would be "cool" to have a movie star as governor.

Schwartenegger and re-appeared after the election.

If he were not partisan, any and every candidate for governor, including Grey Davis would have been given the platform, and the hype by Leno's largess.

Trying to separate Schwartenegger and Leno is like trying to unscramble eggs. Schwartenegger won with the benefit of his celebrity and Jay Leno (and Entertainment Tonight, among other shows) were assisting all the way.

And I'm sure he doesn't care about one less viewer. He showed way too much support for Arnie for my liking. And also way too much French-bashing back when it was "cool".

He stopped being funny a long time ago.

I think that's why they didn't want Letterman, who deserved the job. Jack Welsh didn't like his "attitude." When you finally saw Rush Limbaugh sitting -- as equals -- next to Tom Brokaw during the midterm coverage, that was the end of the "liberal media." Just look at CNBC or MSNBC, who still keeps Matthews around, despite terrible ratings, just so they can have an immediate wingnut replacement in case Russert has some kind heart attack.
