Intel Chairman Says U.S. Is Losing Edge

Andrew S. Grove, co-founder and chairman of Intel Corp., said the nation's high-tech industries are threatened by the growth of overseas outsourcing. (The Washington Post)

One of the founding fathers of the nation's high-technology industry warned in dire terms yesterday that U.S. dominance in key tech sectors is in jeopardy, threatening the country's economic recovery and growth.

Speaking via satellite to a global technology summit in Washington, Intel Corp. co-founder and chairman Andrew S. Grove said that the software and technology service businesses are under siege by countries taking advantage of cheap labor costs and strong incentives for new financial investment.

"I'm here to be the skunk at your garden party," Grove said, noting wryly that his remarks coincidentally fell on the same day as one devoted to promoting nationwide screening for depression.

Grove, 67, singled out China and India as key threats. India's booming software industry, which is increasingly doing work for U.S. companies, could surpass the United States in software and tech-service jobs by 2010, he said.

1. Ok....Andy...why are jobs leaving....?
But Grove acknowledged under questioning that the tech industry itself is responsible for numerous jobs leaving the United States, as firms take advantage of considerably cheaper labor costs in India and elsewhere.

Grove said he is torn between his responsibility to shareholders to cut costs and improve profits, and to U.S. workers who helped build the nation's technology industry but who are now being replaced by cheaper labor. Grove did not offer a solution, saying only that the government needs to help decide the proper balance between the two. Otherwise, he said, companies will revert to their obligation to increasing shareholder value.

2. So he's not really torn
The "obligation" to shareholders always wins. The feel no obligation to employees.

6. Without Government Policy and Intervention
He has no choice.

The laws that govern corporate charters state very clearly that a corporate officer's first duty is to the shareholders and making money.

Employees are merely a factor of production.

9. More importantly, they feel no obligation to america.

Corporations are truly non-national.

Capitalism without gov't regulation soon becomes the tyrany of the rich.

Thank you, repugs.

You can not even go over seas to get the job they took from you here, I guess. This is really starting to be a big problem.I guess teachers are still safe or will we have Indians doing that next? Frankly I do not care that people come into country but when women take jobs pay goes down and same when people from over seas, When will cost of items go down. I now pay over 2.50 for a loaf of good bread. Are the high priced workers putting bread to gether?

4. that's not "bad"
a good, crusty loaf of whole wheat rings-in at $5.00 at the Whole Foods Market on P & 15th in Dupont Circle in DC, where I shop. Some breads cost even more!

Called AOL's 888 # last night with problems I'm having with the new 9.0. I got a guy in INDIA. That's where the jobs have gone.

5. I Emailed This Article To All The Republicans
that still refuse to believe that there is a problem with overseas outsourcing.

Many of these folks are out of work.

The loss of so many good middle class American jobs will come back to bite the Republicans.

8. This is what happens when you let Repukes control education...
Fundies and Repukes are hell bent to 'dumb down' America by crippling our educational programs- the pratical upshot of this is that the US will lose its technological edge and will become more vulnerable as a result.

Idiots.
