CALIENTE -- Despite the efforts of more than 900 firefighters, the largest wildfire in the nation pushed to within seven miles of the Lincoln County town of Caliente on Tuesday.
The Duzak fire, the largest of eight fires burning in Southern Nevada, had consumed about 195,000 acres southeast of Caliente and continued to spread quickly north.
As a huge plume of smoke rose over the hills just south of town Monday, many had made hasty visits to fire stations in search of assurance that the town of about 1,200 people was safe. Fire officials called a meeting on Tuesday to address their concerns....
A total of eight significant wildfires, all of which started from lighting strikes, had burned more than 400,000 acres in Southern Nevada over the past week, officials said. Four of the fires are in Clark County and four are in Lincoln County.
