Housemaid jumps to her death from fourth floor (Kuwait)

SHARJAH — A 25-year-old Asian housemaid was killed last Thursday after she jumped from the fourth floor of a building in Al Qasimia area of Sharjah.

During the investigation, the Sharjah Police found that the maid was trying to run away from a worker of a labourers’ supply agency who had kept her in detention till the completion of her deportation process. The maid used bedsheets tied together for getting down through the balcony to escape from the agency. But, unfortunately, she slipped fell on the ground. She died at Al Qasimia Hospital where she was receiving treatment.

I noticed the story doesn't match the headline too well.

1. Kuwait legalizes many types of slavery and serfdom

That country that we "liberated" in 1991 is nothing more than a medieval dictatorship. If that's the government that those people want, fine, but I don't want the US to be associated with it.

2. You probably don't mean that as it sounds.

It's certainly no more fine that Kuwait has such a system than apartheid was fine in South Africa.

That doesn't mean, however, that we can be the World Police and take over every country that has a variation of "slavery and serfdom" and change these systems overnight, much as people would like to do that. There are other countries which exercise even greater control over citizens and workers on a larger scale, you realize.

We can exert pressure, though, and should.

4. One of my friends says slavery is one of the reasons Saddam invaded Kuwait

I don't know, she was living in London and dating a guy from Jordan at the time. Her boyfriend told her it was well-known that the Kuwaiti's abducted Iraqis, brought them to Kuwait and made them their slaves.

I'm not saying I believe this completely, but there probably were some instances of it- in a country that allows slavery, anything is possible.

6. It is very common to claim someone fell when they were tossed

from very high altitudes in high rises in these countries. The plight of servants in rich Arab households is a scandal that needs to be remedied.

The Arab societies and governments appear to be unmoved by any publicity both here and abroad.Physical and Mental abuse, torture, rape and murders are very commonplace in these countries. They also have no compunction about bringing the same servants to the U.S. and continuing the torture over here against all legal safeguards that are in place.

I am sick of the Arab societies that will not merely condone such violence against helpless young women but have the audacity to express outrage about American outrages at Abu Ghraib with a straight face.At least we Americans take our leaders to task against these violations of human rights.Where are the voices against the violence perpetrated by rich Arab people against some of the poorest and most helpless people on earth? I am sick of this.
