Taft Approves Stem-Cell Research Funding

Gov. Bob Taft on Thursday vetoed a legislative ban on using money from a proposed high-tech bond package to fund embryonic stem cell research.

The ban, included in the $51 billion state budget, applied to Taft's Third Frontier initiative and in particular a proposed $500 million issue that could be before voters in November.

Republican lawmakers pushed the ban in the hopes of securing enough votes to put the bond package on the ballot. But Taft said the ban was too restrictive because it goes beyond the current federal ban supported by President Bush.

....

Democrats, who have so far refused to provide votes needed to put the Third Frontier ballot before voters, in part because of the stem cell ban, applauded Taft's move.

...it'll pass and he'll be back to investing state taxpayer money in Pokemon cards or something.

Well, it can't hurt seeing we're in the flusher anyway.:spray:

4. There's only one reason he vetoed this

COINGATE.

The action was very unpopular in Ohio and so is Taft.

He's hoping vetoing the bill will cancel each other out.

No such luck, Taft. You're toast.

7. Good
Maybe some of my letters got through. The Third Frontier issue should still be separated from the issue for roads and bridges. However, I will vote for it; if it excludes the ban on stem cell research.
