No Bounce: Bush Job Approval Unchanged by War Speech

President Bush’s televised address to the nation produced no noticeable bounce in his approval numbers, with his job approval rating slipping a point from a week ago, to 43%, in the latest Zogby International poll. And, in a sign of continuing polarization, more than two-in-five voters (42%) say they would favor impeachment proceedings if it is found the President misled the nation about his reasons for going to war with Iraq.

The Zogby America survey of 905 likely voters, conducted from June 27 through 29, 2005, has a margin of error of +/-3.3 percentage points.

Just one week ago, President Bush’s job approval stood at a previous low of 44%—but it has now slipped another point to 43%, despite a speech to the nation intended to build support for the Administration and the ongoing Iraq War effort. The Zogby America survey includes calls made both before and after the President’s address, and the results show no discernible “bump” in his job approval, with voter approval of his job performance at 45% in the final day of polling.

In a more significant sign of the weakness of the President’s numbers, more “Red State” voters—that is, voters living in the states that cast their ballots for the Bush-Cheney ticket in 2004—now rate his job performance unfavorably, with 50% holding a negative impression of the President’s handling of his duties, and 48% holding a favorable view. The President also gets negative marks from one-in-four (25%) Republicans—as well as 86% of Democrats and 58% of independents. Impeachment must be followed by trial for treason. It's my firm opinion that sending our men and women to fight a trumped up war just so that he could be seen as a "war president" as he told his ghost writer in 1999, fully qualifies as treason. But unlike what happened with Clinton, this one needs to be pursued all out - so we achieve not only impeachment but also REMOVAL FROM OFFICE. It would be nice to go all the way. If it were to do that, it would mean several things (all good):

-That those in Congress who voted for impeachment, and those in the Senate who voted to convict on the articles of impeachment, had been motivated by momentum, the facts they finally had to face (and swallow), and the input from loads and loads of angry constituents and unavoidable numbers in all the different polls. This would happen if public opinion dictated it unavoidably.

-People mad enough to want to see an impeachment all the way through toconviction and removal from office means there would be extremely widespread concurrence that the offenses that prompted this were egregious enough to warrant prosecution. Once the public turns against you, your goose is thoroughly cooked.

Remember, Nixon finally fell after public opinion so soured on him that his own party realized they had to abandon him. It was a handful of his own party members who went to him and told him he had no support in Congress, and he'd be impeached for certain if he didn't leave voluntarily. He chose to jump rather than be pushed. And his own party abandoned him because public opinion forced their hand. If they'd had a majority of phone calls and letters and appeals to remain supportive, they would have done so. They bailed on him because the tide had turned back home.

Keep it up, guys! Impeachment is no longer a taboo subject. It is no longer unthinkable. It is no longer an impossible dream. This poll proves people are actually entertaining the notion now, and are refusing to flatly rule it out. That it's even entering the discussion in the polls is MAXIMUM SIGNIFICANT.
