Lincoln Memorial Video May Be Revised
http://www.guardian.co.uk/worldlatest/story/0,1280,-5109852,00.html

By MICHAEL J. SNIFFEN
Associated Press Writer

WASHINGTON (AP) - The National Park Service sought out footage of ``conservative - right-wing demonstrations'' to revise the video shown to visitors at the Lincoln Memorial after being pressured by conservatives who complained the display implied Abraham Lincoln supported abortion, homosexuality and liberal causes.

Park Service documents released under the Freedom of Information Act show officials purchased video of President Bush, pro-gun advocates and pro-Iraq war rallies and also considered removing images of Democratic former President Clinton at the memorial.

Park Service officials said they wanted the video to be politically balanced but refused to provide a copy of the revision to The Associated Press, saying it was still being evaluated.

The current eight-minute video, which has been viewed by millions of visitors since 1994, was created by the Park Service in an unprecedented collaboration with high school students around the country. It shows Martin Luther King Jr.'s ``I Have a Dream'' speech, presidential visits and glimpses of dozens of protest marches at the memorial on the Mall.

1. God, they're idiots
Sounds to me like the video shows demonstrations that have occurred at or near the memorial, not what Abe himself thought. What a bunch of maroons!

4. Was there a narrator in the video reading that
young Union lieutenant's rhapsodical description of Abe's "perfect thighs"?

(TONIGHT ON THE HISTORY CHANNEL:

"Abe Lincoln, Frontier Rent Boy...")

2. Well, if they want it to contain the modern republican point of view
I'm sure they can dig up some footage of a Klan meeting somewhere...

3. The last time there was a pro-gun rally
they got nine or ten loonies from the Second Amendment Shitheads, a freeper subsidiary...and they'll have to do some damn fancy editing to focus on just them and miss the hundreds of thousands rallying for gun control behind them...

And the pro-Iraq war rally was even more pathetic; the speakers outnumbered the attendees by almost two to one...DUers used to have screen captures and pictures that popped up every once in a while...

5. It's important for all tyrants to rewrite history -- dear God....
I hope the wheel turns soon, if it's not too late, and we rid ourselves of these people.

7. Interesting.
They see video of pro choice, gay rights and other liberal protestors at the Lincoln Memorial and assume that's meant to show these are things Lincoln would have supported.

I often see such imagery as representing a CONFLICT between the two elements. Like protestors and the Capital Building, Protestors and the White House, etc...

So why are conservatives assuming Lincoln would support these things? Maybe we should ask Freud?

10. Maybe it has something to do with "LIBERTY FOR ALL"?
Edited on Thu Jun-30-05 05:41 PM by TahitiNut
Perhaps it has something to do with Lincoln's words inscribed there: "With malice toward none, with liberty for all.” ?

Or the words “Equal Justice and Liberty for All” carved into the façade of the Supreme Court Building???

8. Maybe right after the video of MLK
saying "I have a dream," they can insert a clip from Tom DeLay's famous, "I Have a Scheme" speech.

9. Remove images of Clinton?
Has Bill Clinton become an unperson? Was he "vaporized"?

At least we know that Oceania has always been at war with Eastasia.

12. They want to rewrite history by editing out everything not right wing
Edited on Thu Jun-30-05 05:29 PM by Solly Mack
that way they can point to it and say "See! America is conservative and always has been!"

right wingers are trying to do to America what the "victor" always did to their victims..erasing the actual history.

15. CON's re-write history cause they ain't got nuthin.
Why should anyone be surprised by what they do. The adoration of Reagan and their claims that he single handed stopped the cold war......."Mr. Gorbachav, tear down that wall,." when the whole world knew that USSR and "that wall," was already in a state of collapse. Reagan had absolutely nothing to do with that, yet the CON's promoted the idea that this deserved re-naming Washington (George Washington, who not only was the First President but whose family owned the very land on which this airport is), and they had a plan to have Reagan's name be used in each state on roads, schools, etc., etc. The CON's seem to be idol worshipers.

Does this mean that our grandchildren and their children will be able to erase any mention of Ronnie Reagan, and the BFEE?

14. AARRGGGGG!
`Absent from the video were any Promise Keepers marches or Marches for Jesus rallies at the capital. The video was totally skewed to present only a leftist viewpoint,'' the Web site said. Sheldon did not return repeated phone calls to his office seeking comment.

17. And neither should we.
If we fail to speak out and educate, we are guilty of allowing it to happen. Don't know about you, but I'm against rewriting history.

19. There's no mention of Abraham Lincoln in the Bible
So how do we know he even existed? The whole Lincoln memorial represents nothing less that a socialist plot to confiscate our tax dollars by force.

22. You've got a point there.
I don't think Abraham Lincoln is specifically mentioned in the Constitution either.

21. The Party of Lincoln
"I think your race suffer very greatly, many of them by living among us, while ours suffer from your presence. In a word, we suffer on each side. If this be admitted, it affords a reason at least why we should be separated. It is better for both, therefore, to be separated."

Abraham Lincoln speaking to a group of Black community leaders at the White House on August 14th, 1862

In all fairness Radical Republicans of 1866-77 such as Sen Charles Sumner (Mass.) and Senators Thaddeus Stevens (PA) really made a sincere effort to not only free blacks but to economically compensate blacks for slavery. The '40 acres and a mule' reparation was proposed by Stevens.
