First Lady Talks Up Progress in Iraq

WASHINGTON -- With Saddam Hussein gone, Iraq will one day stand as a "an example of hope" in the Middle East, first lady Laura Bush said Friday.

Appearing before a packed room of women judges who were expecting her to speak about health issues, Mrs. Bush launched into a defense of her husband's policies in Iraq and Afghanistan.

"Under Saddam, women who came under political suspicion could be tortured or raped or beheaded," she said. "Iraqi men were allowed to kill female relatives for supposed slights to the family honor."

The first lady told the audience, "I'm proud that this oppression has ended."

But she dropped her career the minute she snagged a rich hubbie. Perhaps you're one of those who'd prefer just to bake cookies--well, Laura's said that she's not much of a cook, either. Guess she devoted all her time to raising her lovely daughters.

Concerning "sense of style", Hilary's never been a clotheshorse. However, she's determined what looks good on her & she sticks with it. Did you see the cover of the NYT showing Laura meeting with Hilary before the regime change? Hilary looked fine in her black pantsuit & poor Laura looked like the broad side of a barn in a purple plaid monstrosity. Laura is a nice looking woman but she generally dresses haphazardly. And she's picked a few outfits for "gala" occasions that have caused hilarity from coast to coast.

Hilary & her husband are, in fact, respected & admired in many countries--including this one.

And I guess that Mrs. Bush doesn't care about the women in Saudia Arabia, who aren't even allowed to sit in the front seat of a car, let alone drive one. what an idiot. Iraqi women were better off than women in just about any other Islamic state other than Turkey. Saddam, disgusting as he may have been was a secularist and Iraq was a secular society. From what I've been reading, women in Iraq are more afraid and abused now. There was an article about this in a blog from a woman in Iraq. I'm off to look for it and will post it here ASAP.
