WP/AP: Former Rep. Tim Roemer Won't Run Vs. Lugar
Former Rep. Tim Roemer Won't Run Vs. Lugar
The Associated Press
Thursday, July 7, 2005; 11:41 PM

INDIANAPOLIS -- Former Democratic Rep. Tim Roemer announced Thursday that he won't challenge Republican Sen. Dick Lugar, who will seek a sixth term next year.

Roemer, who represented a northern Indiana district from 1991 to 2002, said in a statement that he wants instead to spend more time with his wife and four children. Roemer now leads the Center for National Policy, a Washington, D.C., think tank....

Lugar, chairman of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee, was first elected to the Senate in 1976. A victory in 1994 made him the first person in Indiana history to win a fourth term to the Senate. He won his fifth term in 2000 with 67 percent of the vote.

1. paid off or scared off?
my guess is "spending time with his family" is code for "they threatened my kids"....but hey, maybe I just see things that way.

2. That is too bad. Who else are we going to get to run against Lugar?
This is Indiana, not exactly a "progressive" state.

There should be no "free" races. Republicans need to be forced to spend $$$ and resources everywhere.

4. Bart Peterson
Mayor of Indianapolis. Very popular with the Indy business leaders. Though Lugar is considered so safe, that I doubt Bart would use up his 'political capital' - unless Lugar were to announce that he would not run again.

Frankly I am surprised that he is running again. He looks very unhealthy and haggard.

5. He is carrying water he doesn't believe in for BushCo and it looks
like it is taking a toll.

I'm glad there are strong Democratic Candidates. Hopefully, they will challenge the Republicans for some offices.

3. The 'ole "spend more time with the family" routine.
I think that means the money was not there to mount a credible race and he was well advised not to make the challenge if he has any future plans politically.

Besides, he has it made. A Washington Think Tank to work for? Awsome

6. I can't get too excited about this
I may disagree with Lugar on a lot of things, but he has been a good and honest senator. He's one of the few Republicans I have any respect for.
