Thousands unite to send anti-GE message to Government

"Some 9000 protesters marched through the centre of Auckland today to show the Government the groundswell of opinion against genetic engineering.

Campaigners rallied around the country in a last ditch attempt to convince the Government it should keep GE restrictions in place."

<snip>

Shouting "We want to be GE free" it took about two hours for the long line of protesters to march up Queen Street.

The banners said things like "What part of 'no one wants it' don't you understand" and "keep your hands of our genes" and "don't cell us out".

<snip>

"People all over New Zealand are saying, why are they doing that.

"Why are they turning their backs on public opinion and their own members."

Hmmm-

Maybe their Gov't is intimidated by the BFEE ??

Hope more countries support non-GE/GM foods

We may not know the long term effects for decades and at the same time seriously deteriorate our food supply - Instead of crop rotation we are "fertilizing" our soils into uselessnes, nevermind the toxic effects on everything - -

(sigh)

NOTE for Mods

- please lock my original thread

- "anti-GE" seemed confusining

- so I edited my "Subject" line to clarify that it means GM foods

Thanks

CC

I have read articles how the BFEE is literally "forcing" it on unwilling nations

- to the extent of suggesting Sanctions !!

- I know - I know

- Hard to believe Junior and his cronies would stoop so low - -

3. Good on the New Zealanders who protested.

This is a major concern of mine but it's hard to get people interested in it when we have so much else to worry about these days.

Did you happen to see an article I posted the other day about a study at Duke University dealing with epigenetic factors? The study showed that obese yellow mice whose diet during pregnancy contained three times the supplements of a normal diet gave birth to brown mice who did not become obese (or develop cancer or diabetes, diseases that curse the obese yellow mice.) The scientists cautioned that, although it suggests that human obesity may be linked to our mothers' diets during pregnancy, we should not assume that it is safe to supplement diets in pregnancy the way they did with the mice.

According to the NY Times article, some scientists are becoming concerned that folic acid supplementation of breads and other grain products may be harming non-pregnant humans. (It's in there to assure adequate folic acid to pregnant women.) They're wondering if increases in diabetes and autism may be related to the folic acid supplements. There has been the desired decrease in numbers of babies born with neural tube defects, but at what price?

The moral is that when you change people's diets, you can't be sure you're not doing harm unless long-term studies are done. Putting GM foods into our diet is the same as adding extra folic acid -- we didn't have any say in either one and one or both may turn out to have negative effects on our health.

The Hippocratic Oath says, "First, do no harm." A good motto in any situation.

5. Somewhere in Africa the US said GM or nothing!
Edited on Sat Oct-11-03 08:59 AM by tlcandie
Saw this recently on LINK or FSTV and the man said that his country asked for regular grain versus the GM grain and the US said NO in no uncertain terms. His country then asked for funding in lieu of the grain (for the same amount of $$$) so they could purchase their own GM free grain and the US said NO, yet again, in no uncertain terms.

EDIT: GE=GM

7. Labeling
If they are being strong armed and have to cave, then I hope they insist on labeling. At least give the consumer a choice. Let franken foods compete on the 'free market' and see how they do. Monsanto and ADM et al, are against labeling because they know what would happen. The consumer would reject their product. We should be insisting on labeling too. We have a right to know what we are purchasing and what we are putting into our bodies.

Peace,
Gina

8. a related issue
http://www.foxbghsuit.com/

This is a pet issue of mine. If you have time to read this site, there's lots here. It's about BGH (Monsanto) in our dairy supply and how two reporters were canned by Faux news for trying to tell the truth about it. This is their site. You will likely find your views on FOX news validated in this material.

9. "BGH treated cows are more susceptible to "mad cow disease"

THANX much for the info

You'd probly like to know where I found that -

HERE -- http://www.helloari.com/bgh.html

Sumpthin' tells me you'll read it

short except from that site:

"some preliminary studies link BGH with increased risks of breast cancer, colon cancer, diabetes and hypertension. BGH treated cows are more susceptible to "mad cow disease", udder infections and birthing deformed calves. Milk and other products from BGH treated cows may contain less protein and higher levels of saturated fat as well as pus, bacteria and antibiotics. Even though the FDA has acknowledged some of these dangers, they maintain approval of BGH's use in beef and dairy products and have refused to require labeling of products derived from use of BGH."

Lots more info and links at the above link

We NEED to know what the heck is making some of us sicker than others, and we already know that some of us have weaker immune sytems than others

- and FDA "allowable levels" DON'T work for all of us

Thanx Again
