Minutemen headed here warned they, too, will be watched
Rights groups, archbishop say border watchers aren't welcome
By EDWARD HEGSTROM

The local Catholic archbishop and immigrant rights activists want to roll up the welcome mat before the Minutemen arrive to patrol for illegal immigrants in Houston.

The Minuteman Civil Defense Corps, an organization working to stop the flow of illegal immigrants, announced this week that it would send observers to watch day laborers in Houston beginning in October. Previous plans called for placing patrols only along the Mexican border. But Archbishop Joseph A. Fiorenza said the Minutemen would not be welcome in Houston.

"We stand against any attempts of outsiders to come into Houston to abuse and intimidate our immigrant communities," Fiorenza said in a statement issued Friday.

Separately, immigrant rights organizations announced that they would fight fire with fire by forming an organization to counteract the Minutemen."For every Minuteman patrolling, we will have at least 10 people patrolling them," said Maria Jimenez, a longtime local activist now associated with the Central American Resource Center, or CRECEN.

find a racist in most cases.

Chris Rock said it best:

""When the war started, I heard some people saying, 'I'm an American. I'm an American. Fuck all them foreigners.' And that was cool. Then they said, 'I'm an American. I'm an American. Fuck the French.' And that was cool. Then they said, "I'm am American. I'm an American. Fuck all them Arabs.' And that was cool. Then they said, 'I'm an American. I'm an American. Fuck all them illegal aliens.' Then I started listening, because niggers and Jews were next."

18. Uhmmm...
Maybe you didn't read the whole thing?

"The Minuteman Civil Defense Corps, an organization working to stop the flow of illegal immigrants, announced this week that it would send observers to watch day laborers in Houston...."

Houston isn't exactly on the border, you know. How does watching day laborers in a major metropolis equate to "just watching the border" in your view?

21. Are they indeed concerned with our borders?
I hear a lot of talk and chest thumping and very little action.

11. I Want To Know That Too..
Seriously. If some political group funded by our government is behind this, I will want to see this effort shut down immediately. This type of shit was done in Germany. My family rembers very well, and that pain still exists today. These idiots are fueling a fire they will not be able to handle. Just plain ignorant.

10. The big fat question I am asking myself is:
Why the emphasis on the Mexican border?
The only time a terrorist plot was uncovered, involving illegal aliens smuggled in across a border, was that situation in Seattle, where they came in from Vancouver (if memory serves me right).

13. If they really want to cut ilegal immigration
They should try picking lettuce to "take away" their jobs. Half an hour of that and their view will change considerably.

15. I wonder...
As a percentage of "illegal immigrants", how many actually cross the border, & end up being employed as "lettuce pickers", versus those being employed in the building trades, & other higher paying jobs?

Is the whole "lettuce picker" charade, actually just a cover for American businesses & corporations, to hire cheap illegal labor, to undermine US labor, social security, etc?

19. Not without a green card.
I worked as office manager for a construction company and it is illegal to hire immigrants who haven't got proper documentation and a valid green card.

If we worked even a little harder at clamping down on our own citizen business owners who are flouting our own laws by hiring illegals for cheap labor, it would go a long way towards alleviating the problem.

Once again, greed is the root of the problem.
