Hurricane causes generator shortage

Thanks to Hurricane Dennis, not only is there an emergency generator shortage in Florida and other Gulf states, but few are available online.

Jon Hoch, founder of online generator superstore Electric Generators Direct.com -- or electricgeneratorsdirect.com -- said he still has a few dozen new generators and several hundred reconditioned generators in stock.

However, the Romeoville, Ill.-based e-tailer said he expected to sell out of his remaining inventory in the next few days.

If you're lucky enough to find a generator locally, buy it, said Hoch. If you're not, your best bet is to have one on the way than none at all.

6. You can also use a car battery

My husband connects it to a transformer which has a electrical socket type of opening and we plug in the TV or the refrigerator, etc. The battery has to be charged at a certain point, but he says it should last quite a while (a week or more).

I got a generator at the beginning of the year becaue the same thing happened last year. :-)
