'Monster' Storm To Slam Gulf Coast With 140 MPH Winds; Going to Devastate
UPDATED: 12:57 am EDT July 10, 2005

A "monster" Hurricane Dennis is expected to slam into the Gulf Coast Sunday as a Category 4 storm with 140 mph winds, according to Local 6 meteorologist Tom Sorrells.

Hurricane Dennis will be a "monster" storm when it slams into the north Gulf Coast tonight and will likely cause widespread devastation, according to Local 6 meteorologist Tom Sorrells.

"This storm just flat out blew up," Sorrells said. "This thing is going to devastate where it hits. It's a monster Category 4 storm by tonight. It's going to be a huge national story for days to come."

-snip-

"If you care anything at all about Panama City or Pensacola, you really have to hurt for these folks because by tomorrow, they would have had a Category 4 hurricane rumble through there with maximum sustained winds of 140 mph -- total devestation in the area," Sorrells said.

1. How is fhe Florida economy doing these days?
With the several hurricanes the state has had in the past, the fewer tourists dollars coming into the US as a whole because foreign travelers don't like Bush, the cuts in federal funding to states overall, and now a massive hurricane hitting Florida once again, just as the Germans, as well as much of Europe, are about to go on vacation...it's got to hurt economically.

Maybe that Kyoto treaty isn't such a bad idea after all, eh, Jebbie?

106. sorry you took it that way.
Being a long-time Florida resident, I and mine tend to look on Hurricane season as just something we have to live with because we want to live in Florida, and we try not to lose our sense of humor. Sorry if you took the map as some sort of attempted proof of God's vengence upon the Republican's...it was then, and is still, just something that's supposed to be a bit of a joke. I didn't think I'd have to explain that when I posted it, but there you are.

8. I have relatives in Tallahasse. I'm worried.
They are in their eighties. If I know my family, they believe everything will be ok and then they forget about it. It's so frustrating they've done this with everything in their lives, sweep the shitty details under the carpet, "cuz it just ain't pleasant"... well, neither is this storm, a CAT 4.. last I heard, they said at 8 pm it's a CAT 1. I told them it's NOT, but they feel it'll all work out ok. Aren't these the type of people who "ride it out" and die?

Sorry, rant over.. just frustrated.

5. This is really terrible
I used to live in that part of Florida, Navarre to be exact, and they were hit very hard during Ivan. I can't imagine what an even worse storm is going to do to the area. Unfortunately, I still have some things in a storage unit that I have not been able to retrieve since I moved out west. I just hope those storage things hold up for this one like they did for Ivan.

she's been in an apartment ever since...right now she's camped out at a hospital...I'm not sure how well she is going to deal with this mess again...the positive side is that since the roof took so long to get done, she was just going to have the inside of her house fixed up starting in two weeks...so if the roof is still on, then it will not affect her too much...

ugh!

but it was pathetic but what they did say is 40,000 houses are still damaged due to IVAN and they are in the midst of a lawsuit

they suggested everybody take pictures of your houses so that the insurance companies don't screw you with this happened in IVAN

just suggestions!!!

Edited on Sun Jul-10-05 01:49 AM by Lorien
Charley hit my neighborhood with 95 mph sustained winds and gusts of 113 mph. Streets with 85 mph winds had very little damage. An extra 40mph makes a HUGE difference!! GET OUT NOW if you are in Dennis' path!!! (I'm more than 130 miles from where Charley made landfall).

Two weeks later, a backhoe cleared the street:

There's a house under this tree;

67. We're having a domestic animal crisis here in FL after last year's
hurricanes. The puppy and kitten boom is out of control, and a new strain of distemper has been found. The human shelters wouldn't take pets, so many animals ended up at the Humane Society. If they came without collars or microchips, they were put down immediately. It was horrible. Please; SPAY AND NEUTER YOUR PETS, and get them MICROCHIPPED. A collar won't always save them!

It's almost surreal that Ivan barely skirted our south coast and Dennis missed our north coast and both will enter the US at almost the same point. Both left a trail of misery for many people, but we were still lucky not to get a direct hit.

meaning it has a very concentrated wind center area, that is very powerful, more like a tornado, that will do a lot of damage in the little strip where it passes, but won't affect as many people as it could have.

TO JUST OFF THE TEXAS COAST. THIS COMBINATION SHOULD KEEP DENNIS
ON A GENERAL NORTHWESTWARD TO NORTH-NORTHWESTWARD TRACK FOR AT
LEAST 2 DAYS...WITH THIS MOTION BRINGING THE STORM INLAND ON
SUNDAY. TRACK MODEL GUIDANCE IS TIGHTLY CLUSTERED IN CALLING FOR
LANDFALL IN THE PENSACOLA FLORIDA-PASCAGOULA MISSISSIPPI AREA...AND
THE OFFICIAL FORECAST TRACK IS BASICALLY DOWN THE MIDDLE OF THE
CLUSTER JUST A LITTLE TO THE LEFT OF THE PREVIOUS FORECAST. AFTER
LANDFALL...DENNIS SHOULD SLOW AND GRADUALLY RECURVE INTO THE
WESTERLIES OVER THE MID-MISSISSIPPI AND OHIO VALLEYS.

THE COMBINATION OF TIGHT INNER CORE...GOOD TO EXCELLENT OUTFLOW OVER

There is a gorgeous little barrier island, Dauphin Island, 30 miles south of Mobile. I'm afraid it's going to be nothing but a sand bar now.

69. How far will you be from the hurricane's eye?
what does the projected path say? If the eye passes over you, please remember to STAY INSIDE until the second wall is gone. It will become very quiet after the first wall passes-just don't mistake that for the storm being "over". If the hurricane is well organized, the second wall's approach can be swift!

Hang in there Maddy! Do you have a cell phone? Make sure that it's fully charged now!If you have any DUer friends outside of the storm area that you can call after it's over, please do so. We want to know that you're safe!

36. someday Americans will learn
When I lived in Okinawa, we had maybe two of these every year. Many cat4's hit and we even had a few cat5 storms. Everything survived. That's because the Okinawans built shit out of cinder blocks. Sure, it didn't look very pretty, but you KNEW you were safe in your house. It's not like you could go inland there. Perhaps those in the path of US hurricanes could learn something from the Okinawans.

People flat out should not live on barrier islands and coastal floodplains. You can deal with wind just fine with very good construction. Being submerged or hit with 30 ft waves is a different story. No structure is going to survive that.

79. Heh heh, fortunately, it's my husband's cousin and
I think it's funny from the standpoint that everyone is always bragging on her. She is very well educated and has a little girl that I hope won't be traumatized by this. I don't know what her husband was thinking and why he went along with (or suggested) that they not evacuate. I also think she got into an argument with her dad over the evacuation and it turned into a pissing contest. Now the parents are safe but worried sick about them.

Darwin Award indeed. Maybe I'll make a little trophy for her if they manage to get out this without too many problems.

I am watching this with amazement. It is so big, and, as a whole, moves so slowly, but the winds are so great and continuous. This is wild. Like a shitload of thunderstorms, windstorms, tornados and lightening that hangs around for the day. And raises the ocean level 20 ft AND dumps torrential rains. Wow. I'll stick with my earthquakes, having moved out of tornado country. Good luck to you all.

84. We may need some more weather guys.
When Ivan hit last year, three guys from the ABC affiliate in Birmingham were on the island at Gulf Shores getting video right before landfall. The surge came in and wrecked their truck and they couldn't get off the island. They spent a terrifying night as the only people left on the island. The were marooned in the concrete stairwell of a multi-story condo right on the beach. They thought they were going to die.

They didn't, and they did get the most awesome video of the hurricane and its devastation. They were the big weather guy heroes of the storm. The station made a DVD of their exploits.

This time, not to be outdone, ALL the weather guys are staying at the landfall spot.

Anderson Cooper is standing out there like an idiot under a big gas station canopy (which will come down soon) in Pensacola. Some CNN woman is standing on a balcony with the rain pelting her and the wind buffeting her around.

They keep saying, "It's a ghost town here." Well, duh.

Hurricane Dennis closed in on the Gulf Coast on Sunday with battering waves and high wind after strengthening into a dangerous storm, roaring toward a region still patching up damage from a hurricane 10 months ago.

As the eye of the storm got closer to shore Sunday, its top sustained wind slowed slightly from 140 mph to 135 mph but it was still rated Category 4, the National Hurricane Center said. On shore, wind exceeding 45 mph blew rain sideways and rolling waves pounded piers and beaches. Landfall was expected Sunday afternoon somewhere along the coast of the Florida Panhandle or Alabama, virtually in the same spot as last year's Hurricane Ivan.

People who stayed in the area wound up their preparations and rushed to get inside.

"It's time now to just hunker down and ride it out," Okaloosa County Emergency Management Chief Randy McDaniel said. "It's just a matter of sitting and watching and waiting."

121. Don't flatter yourself--haters have become common here,
so it's not like you really stand out much.

Of course, if you really want an audience, you could try posting something halfway intelligent now and then, something that might add to the quality of the discussion here, instead of doing everything in your power to make this place a mirror image of Freak Republic. But frankly, I'm not going to hold my breath waiting for that one.

129. What the HELL do you think we've been trying to do?! And because we've
yet to succeed you wish death and destruction on us and our families--hoping for a "RECORD-BREAKING storm season" and "woohoo"ing and cheering it on all along.

There are plenty of us here fighting for Florida and the rest of this country, fighting to have our votes counted, and protesting the war. You'd have to be blind not to have noticed the efforts of liberal Floridians. Will the destruction of our homes or our lives, which you so thoroughly root for, help the cause?

If you're just trying to make trollish posts to anger people who are already stressed out, then congrats! You did it. Way to go! You've done a great job of distracting me for a moment from the fact that my mother is now without power and I don't know if she has enough liquid oxygen to keep her going for very long now that her oxygen converter can't run. I just got my power back a little while ago and I'm thankful that I wasn't in one of the hardest hit areas but a good portion of my family are in those areas.

even Wolf had to correct her. They were looking at the devastating floods in St Mark's Florida and she said the people are accustomed to it - they were smiling. When Wolf looks the sensitive person, things are really bad.
Damn this is tragic for so many ordinary people across the tropics.
<edit add sentence>

Is St Mark's part of Tallahassee?

I'm kind of unclear on how bad it hit where they are (or, hopefully, aren't, after having left to get away from the storm).

I left a message, hopefully they'll call as soon as they can.
