Islamic Nations Call for U.S. Out of Iraq

PUTRAJAYA, Malaysia - The world's Islamic nations opened their biggest meeting in three years Saturday with a call for the eviction of U.S. troops from Iraq and the rapid restoration of its sovereignty.

The gathering of the 57 countries of the Organization of the Islamic Conference, the world's biggest Muslim political group, was split until recently over whether the Iraqi Governing Council should assume the seat held by Saddam Hussein's ousted government. But delegates said Saturday a resolution would be adopted welcoming the council.


Divisions over Iraq threatened to prevent Islamic leaders from finding a unified voice to address a widespread feeling that the war against terrorism has turned into a war against Muslims.

1. War against Muslims

I can see why the leaders feel that way. People have been murdered because they 'looked Muslim', and church signs have read 'Islam: America's No. 1 Enemy'. A Muslim girl was told she couldn't wear her headscarf in school (wonder if Mennonite girls would be required to remove their prayer caps, and crosses and Star of David jewlery would also be banned?). All these things have happened in the US since 9-11.

2. Good call. Let's hope they follow it up with action

The OIC is a useless bunch of old farts, liberally sprinkled with dollahos who are very good at issuing pronouncements and very loathe to actually do anything that might jeopardize their next Rolex.

If they won't get their finger out for Jerusalem, it seems doubtful that they will do so for Baghdad.

5. I agree with you

Seems to me all they're good at is meeting and then announcing their resolution, but there's no follow-up action. They like the good life and don't seem to care much about their fellow Muslims in Palestine.

Actually, it's good for the West that the Muslim countries are a bit passive, but that might change if Bush doesn't quit his aggressive ways. Not that that would worry him ("Bring them on!") but I think he has enough on his plate.

6. It is not the countries that are passive. The US installed regimes

are paid to keep the people barefooted, ignorant and quiet.

That is becoming increasingly difficult, for a variety of reasons.

The US keeps pumping in more money, more threats, and the dictators keep ratcheting up the harshness of their "anti-dissent" actions.

Strangely, this is not inspiring more love for either the US or its bitches.

They are ridiculous. Years ago we used to have HUAC, the House Un-American Activities Committee. A commentator said we should flip it around to see how uniquely stupid it was if it read, “Un-British Activities Committee”. What the hell is un-British? What’s “un-American?!! You can’t imagine the British doing anything like this. Only we can do stupid to this level. Flip their name "Org. of Islamic Countries" around and see how foolish it sounds if it was "Org. of Christian Countries". How insular can they be? How narrow? How self-satisfied and self-righteous?

OK. If you are really concerned about Iraq – then stand up! Take the responsibility that goes with it for this social and economic basket-case of a country. Fifty-seven countries can do a lot more than just bitch.

They are irrelevant. This is just as laughable as the Arab League’s statement last August. “Shortly after the 25-member Governing Council was appointed in Iraq, .. the Arab League… questioned the U.S.-appointed council's legitimacy. "If this council was elected,…it would have gained much power and credibility."

This posturing from a 22 member organization (no doubt all members of the OIC) not one of which has a leader elected in a free and fair election.

Too many regemes concerned about their comfort and power, and not the suffering of their Muslim brothers and sisters.

I expect lots of talk, no action. hopefully, I will be proven wrong.

13. I wonder if Turkey

is a member of this group of 57 countries. If they are, then they are locked in a terrible conflict: they just agreed recently to send Turkish troops to "help out" (I use that term loosely) in Iraq.

How can they possibly sit on both sides of the fence? They are muslim, after all.
