Iraqi police killed in checkpoint raid
Iraqi police killed in checkpoint raid

Fighters have stormed an Iraqi army checkpoint around 65km north of Baghdad, killing seven soldiers and wounding two more.

Three civilians were also wounded in the raid on Khalis, a town just outside Baquba, early on Monday morning.

A third soldier was wounded later when a pickup truck exploded as reinforcements arrived to fend off the attack. Police had no indication of casualties among the fighters.

Scores of recruits were killed and injured when an Iraqi army recruitment centre was bombed on Sunday.

2.  Nine Iraqi soldiers massacred as rebels multiply attacks
BAQUBA, Iraq (AFP) - Nine Iraqi soldiers were killed when rebels launched a carefully-planned dawn raid on a road checkpoint in central Iraq, a day after nearly 50 died in a string of nationwide attacks mostly triggered by suicide bombers.

Meanwhile, the Iraqi authorities said they were investigating the deaths of nine bricklayers, arrested Sunday on suspicion of links to insurgents, who suffocated to death while held in a police van in Baghdad.

Monday's dawn raid by insurgents targetted a checkpoint outside Khales, some 80 kilometres (50 miles) northeast of Baghdad, police said.

Gunmen opened fire on the checkpoint at around 5:50 am and when Iraqi army reinforcements rushed to the scene triggered a bomb hidden in a pickup truck carrying melons which had been parked nearby.

Six soldiers and three civilians were also wounded in the attack.

BAQUBA, Iraq (Reuters) - Insurgents stormed an Iraqi army checkpoint as dawn broke north of Baghdad on Monday, killing 12 people, including nine soldiers. snip

As the sun rose on Monday over their checkpoint on a road at Khalis, near the city of Baquba, 65 km (40 miles) northeast of Baghdad, a detachment of Iraqi soldiers found themselves under fire from several directions, survivors told police officers.

Rocket-propelled grenades targeted sentries in their watchtower, letting other guerrillas move in close to rip into the soldiers on the ground with heavy machinegun fire.

Alerted, other troops headed to the rescue. They appeared to fall into a carefully prepared trap, running into a car bomb.

5. I just don't see the rebels doing this to just a checkpoint! It seems to
me they would only risk an operation in which they would gain something more if they were going to risk their lives. I'm just wondering if this was actually a mini command center, supply center... where the rebels had some loot to take?

Seems they can kill 10 to 50 and wound 30 to 200 soldiers/recruits at any second they desire.

I think the above operation netted stuff they're not telling us about.
