Urbandale Native Dies in Iraq (Look at last line of this article)
Edited on Mon Jul-11-05 09:20 AM by TwoSparkles
I put this in LBN--because it is a story that just came out of Iowa.

I was saddened to read about a local soldier who died in Iraq, and I was struck by the last line of the article.

I thought others on DU might see the line as revealing as I did. It's obvious that we're faced with incredible chaos, violence in Iraq--even if BushCo continues to tow the "We're making progress" line.

Last paragraph of the article:
"His parents said that their son's wish was to be buried in Urbandale. They said that they were told it's too dangerous now to fly his body out of Iraq."

1. Good catch - although it's a frightening thing
I can believe that it's too dangerous to fly out. I just can't believe that the words were actually put out there for all to see. We can't let the proles know the truth now, can we?

What does the family do now? Just wait for their son's body for weeks, months?

4. I believe that it is "too dangerous to fly out."
Edited on Mon Jul-11-05 09:25 AM by TwoSparkles
I think the military told the family that, not expecting that they would interview with the media and reveal that conversation.

I'm sure the family--in their grief--just repeated what was said to them.

I doubt they realized the significance of the comment.

It jumped right out at me.

It tells me that the violence is incredibly thick.

It also leaves one wondering if they're shooting down our aircraft more than they're letting us know.

7. That one line alone sums up the entire situation in Iraq
It's too dangerous to do much of anything yet there we are.

I feel for that family. It's bad enough that their loved one died but now they have to wait until it's "safe" for the military to fly him home. Wonder how long that will be?

2. Too dangerous for a corpse???
If it is too dangerous to fly dead soldiers out, how secure can the country be?
The answer: not at all. Chaos. A quagmire.

Freedom is on the march.

5. Well, that line is very revealing, isn't it?
Too dangerous to get OUT of Iraq, now?!

Keep checking that story throughout the day, just to make certain that one sentence doesn't go down the Memory Hole.

6. So where are the "journalists" who were supposed to go to Iraq for a
"truth tour"? I know that by Saturday, they had made it all the way to Tampa, FL?

Doncha hate lying scum, and doncha hate it more when decent people like these folks pay the price?

8. How dangerous is it?
Per NBC's military correspondent, on the Imus show, to go from Baghdad to the air-port, 2 1/2 miles with an armed escort it costs $35,000.00.

14. well put in those terms
it would absolutely make no sense to bother sending home a dead soldier. :sarcasm: Now, removing some precious antique objects? Well that is another story and I'm sure they are moving around every day. More :sarcasm:

9. But certainly they must be evacuating wounded?
Allawi says beginnings of civil war. Too dangerous to fly our dead out of Iraq. War going well? Not so much?

10. That doesn't really ring true to me.
It just seems like it would be too hard to hide a bunch of aircraft getting shot down. and if it were really that dangerous, bush gang folks like Gonzalez would not be making surprise trips.

Also, my friend in Iraq says that he prefers to fly rather than drive to get around the country because it's safer.

anyway you look at it, that last statement in the article sure needs some follow-up investigations!

12. Is it possible
Edited on Mon Jul-11-05 10:48 AM by drm604
that it's too dangerous to transport the body to the airport from where it now is? I know that it literally says "it's too dangerous to fly" but maybe that's not completely correct. Perhaps the military spokesperson stated it badly, or the parents misunderstood or stated it poorly to the press. It might be a matter of a particular road being currently under siege rather than it being too dangerous to fly. There must be frequent flights into and out of Iraq. I know the situation there is bad, but surely our troops aren't trapped there.

15. strange numbers
Saw a BBC newscast last week featuring a rehab hospital for UK war vets wounded in irak. Commentator said 89 dead and 3000 wounded though some of those wounds were not at all serous. US says 1750 dead and ?how many wounded. Using the brit ratio, 89/3000, us wounded totals should be 1750/? which calculates out to roughly 60,000. Obviously this a very rough estimate, but 60000 is a much larger number than we hear. Could be brits have more action, or they may be lousy fighters, or just that us dead/wounded ratio is very much lower due to better body armor, equipment. But, just another "tell" that something ain't right on MSM.

Since the Brits operate in the south where there is less violence, don't you think?

16. This morning, on AAR, Marc Maron had an expert on who said civil
war is the only possible result of the destabilization of the area. He said americans keep thinking of the Iraqi people as a people, as being members of one coutnry, and we assume that if we can take care of a few insurgents, everyone else wants the place to slowly become pittsburgh.

Not gonna happen. The Sunni's hate the Shia, and think the country is theirs. The Shia hate the sunnis ,the minority, for keeping them down under Hussein for decades. The two groups are far right Iranian influenced theocrats: More like the taliban than anything else. The Kurds are pro american and so both the Sunnis and Shia hate them. This is not one country, and so, it can't be healed. Period.

So, we just took a fairly stable country, the most western arab nation and handed it to Iran, and the Ayitollas.

It doesn't matter if we leave or stay, they'll get around to killing each other eventually, or killing us to get around to killing each other. We might as well leave and let it happen now, rather than 20 years from now. The american people have no desire to permanently occupy the area, so, someone will, and it will be Iran.

18. I don't; know if it's inevitable, but Bush isn't helping the odds any.
It seems that the longer this period of chaos continues, the more likely that the these groups will begin to strike out on their own and begin the cycle of claims, counterclaims and attacks.
