Venezuela and Vietnam Establish Diplomatic Ties, Discuss Trade Possibilities
President Hugo Chavez's government has established diplomatic relations with Vietnam, Venezuela's foreign ministry announced.
During a visit to Hanoi, Venezuelan Deputy Foreign Minister William Izarra met with top Vietnamese officials, including Vietnamese Foreign Minister Nguyen Dy Nien, according to a statement issued Monday. The Vietnamese foreign minister was invited to visit Caracas in September to sign a cooperation and commercial agreement with Venezuela, the world's fifth largest oil export.
Izarra, who is currently on a tour of Southeast Asia, visited Sri Lanka last week.
Since taking office in 1999, Chavez has reached out to establish ties with African and Asian countries while relations with the United States have grown tense.
