Sen. Trent Lott's mother dies at 91

PASCAGOULA, Miss. — Iona Watson Lott, the mother of U.S. Sen. Trent Lott, R–Miss., died Saturday at Singing River Hospital in Pascagoula, the Jackson County coroner said. She was 91.

The cause of death was not immediately released. She had been in a nursing home for several years.

Iona Lott and her husband, Chester Paul Lott, were living in Grenada when Trent Lott was born Oct. 9, 1941.

They moved among several communities in Mississippi as their son was growing up. Iona Lott taught at the Calvary School near Winona and her husband drove a school bus, then turned to sharecropping, renting a stretch of cotton fields in Duck Hill. When Trent Lott was a sixth–grader, his parents moved with him to Pascagoula.

PASCAGOULA - Iona Watson Lott, mother of U.S. Sen. Trent Lott, was remembered Monday for her love and effectiveness in teaching children and also for her outspoken approach to life.

"Iona Lott loved children and the children loved her," said Irene Saliba, who as principal of Lake Elementary School hired Mrs. Lott as a fourth-grade teacher just after World War II. "She was an excellent teacher and got along so well with the teachers and students. She was a wonderful person to work with in education," said Saliba, who worked in education for 38 years.

Mrs. Lott, 92, died Saturday night at Singing River Hospital. She had been at Bay Towers, an assisted-living home, which was evacuated for Hurricane Dennis.

Her pastor, the Rev. Rex Yancey of First Baptist Church, said, "Miss Iona was totally from the old school and reminded me so much of my own mother."

her situation. Some nursing homes and assisted living centers are very, very nice- if you can afford them, which I'm sure this family could. Mrs. Lott may have been in one of those, at her own request. In home care isn't always the best option, and can make for a lonely, isolated life for the individual receiving the care.

Where I live, those aren't nursing homes at all. She may have been in her own little apartment in an assisted living center. If so, they have very good care and they aren't cheap. Plus they're around people their own age to talk to and go places with, beats the hell out of being alone somewhere.

If it was anyone else I might agree, but look at Trent Lott's record of taking care of children, poor people, the sick, etc. Unless you're an old racist or a corporation, Trent Lott has never seemed to have much for you.

Mr. Lott's record of which you speak is based on his belief that it isn't the government's business to take care of children, poor people, the sick, etc. You and I disagree with him on those points; it is what makes him a Republican and us Democrats.

However, while Mr. Lott is a conservative, he is also a mother's son. Now, I know nothing about his relationship with his mother; in fact, until today, I knew nothing about his mother at all. Nevertheless, that I disagree strongly with Mr. Lott's politics is no reason to assume that his relationship with his mother was anything less than it should have been.

the difference between republicans and democrats is that while there may be some Republicans who treat their own family and friends well they can't seem to care or think much about those outside of those they know.

democrats believe we must help everyone to a certain extent. it doesn't matter whether we know them or even if we like them. what matters is the act in itself is the right thing to do.

you see this hypocrisy many times including things like abortion rights when conservatives reluctantly admit they would support whatever decision their own family member made yet they want to take away the right from everyone.

34. My dad was in a nursing home when he died.

Because I was the only one able to care for him and he was a big guy and totally incontinent, and unable to walk.

His care at home after my mom died cost us $12,000 a month for a nurse for 24 hours. Not even a nurse, mind you, but either a homemaker or a companion.

No matter how much money you have, when someone lives that long, you go through a ton of it.

When my dad found out how much it was costing me, he insisted on going into a nursing home. He wanted the money to go to his grandchildren.

And, he was very happy there. It was a really nice place and they treated him very, very well.
