'Cash-laden' Brazil MP detained
Brazilian police have detained an opposition MP after finding about six million Reals ($2.6m) in suitcases.

Joao Batista Ramos da Silva was held with six other people as he prepared to leave the airport in the capital, Brasilia, on a private plane.

The deputy from the Liberal Front Party - who was due to fly to the city of Goiania - has not been charged.

He is also a bishop for an evangelical church, and is quoted as saying the money was worshippers' contributions.

The money had been found stuffed into seven suitcases, police said. (more at link)

The church's name is Universal Church of the Kingdom of God. (Is that an over-the top name or what?) Sleaziness abounds in that joint. Also, they're one of the most fanatic churches around here. One of its priest kicked a Catholic image of the Virgin Mary in national TV a few years ago, causing an uproar.

Fuckers. I hope he is arrested and meets Zé (Bubbas Brazilian, more well-endowed cousin).

(Edit: thanks to Barbara Ann for the "kicking" link)

5. Scary info from your link:
It is the fastest growing church in Brazil -- and one of the richest. Followers are asked to give 10 percent of their earnings to the church.

2. My wife is from Brazil and talking to my Father-in-law..
he believes that the country is now in worse shape than when they froze the currency a decade ago. I'm not sure of the specifics, but about a decade ago, the Brazilian gov put a freeze on everyone's accounts and you could not withdraw more than a set amount per month. Then they switched currencies and it devalued peoples savings.

My father-in-law says he feels worse about the gov situation now than he did at that time.

3. No way. It was MUCH worse back then.
Maybe he doesn't like Lula and the Left and therefore sees doom all around? (a la wingnuts during Clinton?)
