$100 billion South African suit targets insurers

A U.S. lawyer says he plans to sue South African finance group Alexander Forbes for defrauding workers during apartheid, in the first of a new round of lawsuits targeting insurers and banks.

Ed Fagan, who has already stirred controversy with a separate slew of multi-billion dollar apartheid lawsuits, said on Sunday he would sue for a total of $100 billion (60 billion pounds) on behalf of thousands of black South African ex-employees.

Alexander Forbes is the only named financial services defendant in the case, which Fagan hopes will force the group, and certain employers, to reveal the names of banks and other firms he believes profited unfairly from misuse of pension fund money.
