N. Irish Catholics clash with police after march

BELFAST (Reuters) - Catholic protesters hurled bricks, bottles and petrol bombs at police in Northern Ireland on Tuesday in a violent demonstration against Protestants marching through their area of Belfast.

Police used water cannon to disperse the crowds who had gathered to vent their anger against Protestants passing through the largely Catholic Ardoyne area in a tense climax to the "marching season."

Thousands of pro-British Protestants parade through the streets during the marching season to celebrate a 300-year-old battlefield victory over Catholics.

The parade passed off peacefully but violence broke out when police used water cannon on protesters who had hurled a handful of missiles toward the marchers.

Your absolutely right. Ever since the beginning of time we have had a problem sharring. It doesnt matter what religion or group a person belongs to either its all about control and power. "About 80 police officers were injured, one seriously, during rioting in north Belfast.

The trouble started when nationalists attacked police after an Orange Order parade passed the Ardoyne shops area.

Officers were attacked with petrol and blast bombs as they withdrew. It is understood dissident republicans linked to the Continuity IRA were responsible.

Sinn Fein blamed the police for what happened, but the DUP said that Tuesday's violence was pre-planned.

Petrol bombs and three blast bombs, as well as more bottles and bricks, were thrown at the police. "
