A passage from India - IBM -13,000 jobs USA, +14,000 jobs in India
According to a confidential memorandum, IBM is cutting 13,000 jobs in the United States and in Europe and creating 14,000 jobs in India. From 2000 to 2015, an estimated three million American jobs will have been outsourced; one in 10 technology jobs will leave these shores by the end of this year.

Stories like these have aroused a primal fear in the Western public: that they might soon need to line up outside the Indian Embassy for work visas and their children will have to learn Hindi.

Just as my parents had to line up outside the American consulate in Mumbai, and my sisters and I had to learn English. My father came to America in 1977 not for its political freedoms or its way of life, but for the hope of a better economic future for his children.

1. Wow...
Why do U.S. corporations hate America so much?

I bet you'll never hear anyone from Bushco uttering those words...

2. According to Wired
The average programmer in the US makes approx. 82k, the average programmer in India makes 13k (with no benefeits). But, due to the exchange rate the Indian programmer is middle to upper middle class. (while 13k wouldn't be enough to survive in the US, it is enough to make you quite comfortable in India) .

7. Not true there are no benefits
but the government pays for health care, so that is one less expense that IBM has to worry about.

12. For most, it is MUCH lower... I don't know where Wired is getting that
Most programmers in India would make the equivalent of 500-2000 US $ per Month.

This was from people working IT in India that I have met.

3. There's just one problem ... they won't hire Americans
Edited on Tue Jul-12-05 11:44 PM by LastDemocratInSC
During the last 10 years I've worked with many Indians in information techonology jobs. The Indian men/women I've worked with were well qualfied, for the most part, and very pleasurable to be around. I don't fault them for wanting to get themselves and their families out of India and into the United States, if even for the duration of a visa.

I'm not aware of any Indian companies that will hire Americans. It's a one-way street.

Enough said by me.

Well, it goes a bit farther than that. Tata is getting involved in US public and private corporations and even some governments. One of the problems with Tata is they undercut contract labor salaries...

5. When all of the decent paying jobs leave the US, who will buy the
overpriced goods then? Who? The Indians? Not on 13,000.00 a year. I guess companies like IBM will just have to lower their prices so the people who are working can afford them.

10. I dunno, when is it going to ever catch up?
I know Bush evidently likes having me and many other educated people do brainless jobs for $9/hr, but those of us who are underemployed and making these lame wages certainly can't pump a whole lot of money back into the economy. I'm kind of pondering at the moment whether I should go back to school and get an education in something that isn't quite so "outsourcable," though I'm not sure what that is. I'd like to do accounting but I figure that industry could also be sent to India once big business bullshits people into complacency on the privacy issue. My computer science degree has been utterly worthless so far in the past two years since I've got it.

13. It's the Revenge of the Schoolyard Bullies Upon Us Geeks
I know Bush evidently likes having me and many other educated people do brainless jobs for $9/hr

So much so that he gives companies a tax incentive for shipping
our jobs overseas.*
All those grown-up schoolyard bullies hated the '90s, most of
all because they had to watch us geeks making big bucks, while they
were stuck working for Walmart.
Now that they have taken over the government, they want to make sure
that nothing like that ever happens again.

* Reversing that tax incentive was one of Kerry's key campaign issues, but you never heard a peep about that in the media.

14. It Will Get Better Eventually
Quite a few companies that outsourced have found that it did not work out so well for them. Salaries in India are going up due to the
hiring boom there. If you try to hire cheap, you will hire unqualified people, as a number of recent entrants into the outsourcing frenzy have
discovered.

Sooner or later, Congress will have to remove the tax incentives for outsourcing.

When the Chinese inevitably stop propping up the dollar, that will also
drive up the cost of outsourcing, and it could well cease to make sense
economically.

15. Security
Learn whatever you can about network security, computer security,
encryption, intrusion detection, PKI, anything to do with security. They can't outsource all of that.

A few years back, when my employer as cancelling projects and having
a massive layoff, the security group (ours) had no layoffs at all,
and was allowed to hire internally. That growth has continued.

Security also lends itself to consulting, which by its nature cannot
be outsourced completely.

Your mileage may vary, but this has worked for me.

18. My husband has a IT degree and he works for a government.
contractor. The problem is that many jobs are given to contractors who outsource some or most of the work. The US federal government is not supposed to outsource because US tax dollars pay for it and for security reasons, and they don't. What they do is let contractors do the work and the contractors outsource. How does it feel to know that your tax dollars are being outsourced? Look at Halliburton, they outsource as well as others.
Check this out.

My husband was saying the same thing you are. He said maybe he should learn a trade like plumbing. You can't outsource a clogged toilet.

He says that all the time. "Somebody in India cannot fix your toilet bowl or shower." His nephew makes $45/hour with his regular job and does work on the side. Hasn't been out of work a day in over 20 years.

world. Without jobs we won't be, we will be a third rate third world country. You must benefit from outsourcing. Welcome to my kill filter.

8. Just their PC division
The one that lauched the PC as a credible business appliance in the early 1980's, when personal computers were considered hobbyist toys.

The PC that to this day sets the standard for compatibility.

It's Chinese now.

21. Well, if you want to lift people out of poverty in other countries...
This is how to do it. Send jobs that allow them to make a decent living, and the standard of living in that area gradually increases. On the bright side of things, this will help eliminate poverty in parts of India, ensuring there will be no root causes of terrorism which allows radicals to recruit impoverished Indian citizens to become terrorists.

Edited on Wed Jul-13-05 04:58 PM by calipendence
That would give the Rethugs a lot of votes in the house now wouldn't it, and quite a few electoral votes as well if these folks vote for who send them their jobs!
