UK police hunt mastermind behind London bombings
By Michael Holden

LONDON (Reuters) - Police hunted on Wednesday for a mastermind behind suicide bombings in London as the country reeled from the news that the attackers, Muslims of ethnic Pakistani origin, had been born and brought up in Britain.

Security experts said the first suicide bombers to hit western Europe, killing at least 52 people, would have received training and direction from a more senior Islamist militant.

That raised the prospect that a master bomb-maker was still at large and prompted questions about whether future suicide bombers had already been armed and instructed.

"I certainly think we have to organize ourselves on the basis that there are other people prepared to act in this way," said Home Secretary Charles Clarke.

Police on Wednesday said at least three of the bombers involved in bombing the London transport system are believed to be British males of Pakistani origin who lived in West Yorkshire in Leeds.

The bus bomber is believed to be dead, and police said there was "strong forensic and other evidence" a second bomber died at Aldgate. Investigators are now trying to establish if the other two are alive or died in the explosions.

A relative of one of the suspects was arrested in West Yorkshire on Tuesday and was being brought to London to be quizzed by the anti-terrorist branch.

Six search warrants were served on Tuesday under the Terrorism Act on houses in and around Leeds.

4. Notice how they assume there is a hierarchy in the terrorist network?
"would have received training and direction from a more senior Islamist militant"
"master bomb-maker"

They do that because if it's not true, then their job is like swatting ants with a flyswatter, there is noplace to start and no end once you do get started.

But this they have correct:

"I certainly think we have to organize ourselves on the basis that there are other people prepared to act in this way"
