Thought Toddler Gay, Dad Kills Son
"(Tampa, Florida) A 21 year old Tampa man is charged with murder after his 3-year old son was pummeled into unconsciousness and then died.

Ronnie Paris Jr. went on trial for his own life this week in a Tampa courtroom. The toddler's mother, Nysheerah Paris, testified that her husband thought the boy might be gay and would force him to box.

Nysheerah Paris told the court that Paris would make the boy fight with him, slapping the child in the head until he cried or wet himself. She said that on one occasion Paris slammed the child against a wall because he was vomiting.

The court was told there had been a history of abuse by Paris. Prosecutor Jalal Harb said that in 2002, the Florida Department of Children & Families placed the child in protective custody after he had been admitted to the hospital several times for vomiting.

42. Effects of Socialized/Population-Level Homophobia
Totally horrible, brings tears to my eyes. What a monster.

This just shows how much education needs to be done to erase homophobia. A country in which, from the top down, condones discrimination and second-class status to LGBT persons is the breeding ground for continued violence.

How to craft these intervention messages, and how to deliver them to target groups who are threatened (somehow) by gays and lesbians-- this is the real goal.

When religion (the Christo-Nazis) and our government (Bushco) corroborate on a campaign of hatred and fear, we need a true revolution of information targeted to all Americans-- but especially those who believe that there are no LGBT folks in their life, or who are their neigbors....

In Massachusetts, the focus on gay marriage in the past year has familiarized so many previously intolerant people with LGBT people, their families, and their dreams (common ones)-- that there is much less opposition left to gay marriage here.

51. Indeed! "From The Top Down..."
<< A country in which, from the top down, condones discrimination and second-class status to LGBT persons is the breeding ground for continued violence. >>

Starting with our government officials and particularly with RELIGIOUS LEADERS. They all create, foster and contribute to the climate of intolerance, hostility and violence toward GLBT people.

Equally culpable are those within the political system, AND within their religion who do nothing and say nothing... thereby offering their consent and approval.

It sickens me. I'm so sad for that child.

that would have been set off on something.

Not disagreeing with your statements in the least.

Just trying to highlight that unbridled rage can find any excuse to manifest as violence.

IIRC, Janeane Garafolo (sp?) said on a PBS tv program that violence against gays has risen 25% in last 5 Bush years. :(

Since his "elections," it has become an "open season" on gays. It is still acceptable for many to harm, maim, or even kill gays. Violence against gays is a very serious problem, but never in my wildest nightmares would I thought I would have ever read something like this.

Edited on Thu Jul-14-05 07:05 PM by madeline_con
A bit off topic, this post of mine. BUT how does the homophobe community justify claims that allowing gays to marry would destroy the institution?

Are they afraid less hetero couples would marry for some strange reason? Do you have any info on this?

EDIT added:

BTW, from what I hear from the homophobes I know, they seem to think gay = rapist or some such bull as that. Also, the worst thing for some 'phobes is the idea that a same sex individual might find them attractive. :eyes:

Could be a case of plain old ignorant homophobia. (I can't EVEN imagine what a child his age could possibly do to cause someone to think he might be gay.)

My son mimics his older sister and me, and it's become a family joke. He has his dollies (calls them his buddies most of the time), and he has always loved to pretend to cook.

If his son acted like that, he was just like all other 3 y.o. boys. But honestly, who the hell cares if he's gay or not? He was his son, for pete's sake, and that should trump everything.

I'm just ill. That poor little boy dying such a sickening, horrible death because of his father's rage and sickness.

82. The punishment he deserves
I am against the Death Penalty, but it's very, very difficult for me to care much about men like this.

I will say, though, that thre is no doubt in my mind that this man was himself a badly abused child. We HAVE to stop the cycle of abuse. We must. Had this child lived, he would have stood a very good chance of becoming a child abuser himself. Probably a wife beater as well. Perhaps criminally involved in other things too.

This kind of home environment DESTROYS people, and ruins their chances for anything approaching a happy, productive, successful life. It's not fair -- no child deserves to have

It's one of the things I absolutely loved about Howard Dean -- and couldn't understand why people didn't consider him a Progressive. Once as governor he was faced with the necessity of raising the prison budget by some 16%. He did NOT want to, but was finally persuaded he had no choice. So in response he instituted a little program that was wildly successful. For just $100 per year per child, child abuse rates were cut by 47% and child sexual abuse by 72%. Those are utterly INCREDIBLE figures. And not only are those children happier NOW, not only will their adult lives be more successful, productive and fulfilled, but Vermont's prisons will need less money and other social services or social ills and costs will be dramatically decreased as well. $100 per year per child.

The program itself? Simple: every new mother got a visit in the hospital and the OFFER of a follo-up visit at home. During the follow-up visits she was offered whatever services she and her family needed, whether job training, food stamps, parenting skills classes, etc. $100 per year per child. Unbelievable return on investment. We should all be marching in the streets demanding such a program in our state.

90. I probably do, but it would take me a weekend to explain.
I was a social worker for 7 years, and currently I clerk for a law firm that sometimes represents the kid, sometimes the parent.

Bottom line: justifiably so, the standard of evidence to keep a child away from a parent is very high, and sometimes, people put up a great facade (that's the sentence explanation).

It does not justify, but perhaps explains.

Calling things correctly is so difficult that the Supreme Court ruled that the Dept is not liable for children who are in the custody of their parents, unless they are dependents of the court. So, tragically, a Dept is safer legally keeping the child with the parents.

Hope that in some way explained the difficulty.

9. Here's a longer article, if you can take it....... (so sad)
Mom testifies dad beat their 3-year-old son
She says she originally kept quiet about the abuse because she didn't want to get him in trouble.
By CANDACE RONDEAUX, Times Staff Writer
Published July 13, 2005

TAMPA - Nysheerah Paris didn't say anything about the beatings at first. She didn't want to get in trouble. She wanted something good to happen, for her son to come back, for him to start breathing on his own. She wanted him to be "Little Ronnie" again - his father's first and only son.

But 3-year-old Ronnie Paris didn't come back that day, or the next. Instead, he died Jan. 28 after he was taken off life support at St. Joseph's Hospital.

The boy's death came a week after his father gave him the beating of his life, prosecutors say.

It has been five months since Ronnie B. Paris Jr. was charged with murdering his son. On Tuesday, the boy's mother testified against him in court. She did not remember much about the six weeks she spent with her son after caseworkers moved the boy back to his parents' home from foster care. But she said she remembered the day she saw Paris Jr., 21, beat her son to death.

Dad Boxed With 3-Year-Old, Mom Says In Murder Trial

By BEN MONTGOMERY bmontgomery@tampatrib.com
Published: Jul 13, 2005

TAMPA - Even though the boy would shake and wet himself, his father, Ronnie Paris Jr., would box with the 3-year-old, slapping him in the head until he cried because he didn't want his son to grow up to be ``a sissy,'' the boy's mother testified Monday.
Others corroborated Nysheerah Paris' testimony as the prosecution built its case during the first day of the capital murder trial of Ronnie Paris Jr., 21, accused of abusing 3-year- old Ronnie Paris until the boy slipped into a coma Jan. 22.

He died six days later with swelling on both sides of his brain.

``He was trying to teach him how to fight,'' said Shanita Powell, Nysheerah Paris' sister. ``He was concerned that the child might be gay.''

Even Sheldon Bostic, who was Ronnie Paris Jr.'s Bible- study friend, said he warned the father several times not to play so rough with his son.

``He really did what other fathers do - slap box,'' Bostic said. ``He always said he didn't want his son growing up to be pushed around.''

I never did this with my son, and my dad never did it with me. Unless Florida is a mighty strange place, I can't believe that too many fathers fight ('slap-box') with their 3 year olds.

16. It's so horrible
I passed it around too. A little boy! When my brother was little he played with my Rainbow Brite doll but he likes girls now. My cousin when she was younger was the biggest tomboy I knew. She wore hats, her hair in a ponytail and even boy clothes and shoes but she's now married to a man and dresses a lil more girly. This attitude is so disgusting and is very horrible. We have to make people aware though of what this mentality does. Spread this around everywhere. That poor little boy never had a chance to even prove he was straight.

. . if girly boys are allowed to grow up then they will probably turn out all right? i.e not gay?

Are you suggesting that . . if he did have a chance to grow up and prove he was straight then he could have avoided being killed?

What if he grew up to be gay? Would the father have been justified in killing him then?

Please explain your post.

A friend of mine had the same problem with a bird of that kind. But he also had an African Grey, and it when it got tired of the noise it would tell the Quaker to "shut up" as well. :)

(And I concur - abusing an animal or child is a sign of a weak person who cannot master their own issues, and who acts our their failings by victimising those who cannot defend themselves.)

Why in the hell is she telling us about all of this horror after the fact? She is as guilty as the male individual is (he is no father and he is no parent, am not sure what word to use).

I could not read all of the details, I'm afraid, as I am completely unable to process either the abuse or the "reason" for it. I wish I believed in Hell.

THe homophobia existed - but it was exploited and whipped into something frenetic and crazed by the rw political strategists and politicians. And they (the strategists and politicians) have become so soulless that they would read a story like this -and not give it a second thought per their role in creating an atmosphere that enabled a crazy nutball to justify his violence and abusive impulses to go seriously over the edge.

Their daily hateful rhetoric on the radio creates a climate whereby such persons begin to feel that it is morally defensible to beat a child to death because of alleged homosexuality.

The FCC should take away their broadcast licenses pending an investigation of the impact of hate radio on parents who abuse their children.

I'm so glad we had all those "Gay Marriage Amendments" on the ballot throughout the battleground states last year. Pretty much laid the groundwork for stuff like this to happen. I'm sure Rick Santorum will, any minute now, blame "Boston Liberalism" for this tragedy.

I remember listening to his show once (he's practically worshiped in our old church, especially by my in-laws), and it was all I could do not to start screaming and throw the radio out of the car. I couldn't believe how he said it was okay to spank (especially for defiance, which trust me, doesn't work) and to make sure that the parents are 100% in charge of absolutely everything. He's evil.

25. Christians believe that being gay is a sin
and the fundamentalists among them are convinced that gayness is caused by a gay demon.

I think that all Christians, Muslims, and Jews should reflect on those aspects of our religions that have elements at odds with reason and science, not to mention human rights. I say this with a heavy heart, for while my own branch of Judaism has rejected ancient sexual taboos, many of my own refuse to shake a woman's hand, or to accept the GLBTs among them.

It is no accident that the most radical elements in Christianity and Judaism are allies in a crusade to rebuilt the ancient temple in Jerusalem, and I suppose re-establish the corrupt priesthood that was rejected by the Zealots in the First Century CE.

The United Church of Christ has just voted in favor of gay marriage, the Episcopal Church has consecrated an openly gay bishop, there are congregations that are predominantly gay.

By all means, blame the guilty parties here, who seem to be fundies, but don't tar open and affirming congregations and demoninations with the same brush.

128. Jesus never said a word about gays, and he treated women as equals
Fundamentalists put Paul's words on a par with Jesus's words. Why? Because fundamentalists believe that every word in the Bible is Divinely inspired. So when Paul says something stupid about women, such as to keep quiet and to ask their husbands if they have any questions, his evident misogyny is given equal weight to what is Jesus's obvious disdain for sexual taboos. Can you imagine Paul initiating a conversation with a woman at the well that he is not related to? I'll bet Jesus even shook hands with women!

This is what I meant to say in my post. All of us that come from the great Middle Eastern monotheistic religions need to come to grips with those aspects of our theology that are clearly bigoted and intolerant.

You know, G-d never wanted a temple in the first place! It was King David that kept insisting in building one until G-d told him that he had too much blood on his hands to build it.

because once the inmates find out what he did, he's going to be a daily punching bag and blow-up doll for the rest of his days there. THAT's what he deserves, not getting put to sleep like a dog. Toddler killers/rapists/molesters are the lowest pieces of shit in prison, because many inmates are parents themselves, and were also abused as children.

67. This goes beyond disgust
This story is numbing in the heinousness of its details. A child vomitting gets slapped into a wall? The boy is taught to box with beatings until he wets himself? This man that did these things to this child is inhuman and deserves the most strict penalty the law will allow. This child was treated like a punching bag, and had his basic human dignity taken away from him before this monster took his life away from him.

Every day the thought of the death penalty becomes a less viable punishment in my mind. Still I think that some crimes merit the death penalty. This one is one of them. Of course, when some of the inmates in the prison get ahold of this man, they may enforce their own death penalty.

It's interesting that while the first article mentions the gay issue, the articles from the St. Pete Times and Tampa Tribune say nothing about it.

What the hell is that about? The mother did specifically say that the father thought the child might be gay. Isn't that newsworthy to the Tampa Tribune and St. Pete Times?

109. As if boxing or fighting makes a man to begin with
Edited on Thu Jul-14-05 06:47 PM by despairing optimist
Suppose the kid had lived to box well. He still could have discovered himself to be gay. There are gay boxers, you know. Gay boys and men do fight back, though some straights may find that hard to believe until they get what's coming to them. And girls and women are boxers too, straight and gay both. What difference does it make, except to ignorant, small minds?

The poor child lived in hell all his life. The story came out only at the end of it. He is in a better place now; no one can hurt him anymore.

As for his parents, if society is to be judgmental, it should do so by issuing parenting licenses. It's clear that people should not be allowed to have children simply because they are biologically capable of having them. That may be freedom to the adults, but it may mean misery and pain for their children. If we are to protect the unborn fully, we need to start before they are even conceived, for if human life begins at conception, surely decent human life begins with decent human beings as prospective parents. Eh, religious wingnuts? The way I figure it, it sort of leaves fanatics out of the picture since their bigotry and hatred leads to killings such as this one to begin with.

Jury Finds Father Guilty In Death Of Little Boy

By BEN MONTGOMERY bmontgomery@tampatrib.com
Published: Jul 15, 2005

TAMPA - Ronnie Paris Jr. tried to toughen up his son.
Big fists on a little head.

He beat the boy so badly he became lethargic, stopped eating and began wetting himself. On Jan. 22, the skinny, underdeveloped 3-year-old went to sleep on a neighbor's deep-red couch while his parents studied Bible verses with friends from Deeper Life Ministries.
(snip)

Thursday afternoon, a jury found Paris, 21, a former city sewer worker in a borrowed suit, guilty of second-degree manslaughter and aggravated child abuse.
(snip)

``Oh man,'' said his father, Ronald Paris Sr., as he finished a bag of Cheetos outside the courtroom. ``I raised my son in the right way. We played football, went fishing, went to wrestling matches, boxing, all that.''

How could they ignore him? How could they just put him down to die on some stranger's couch without even his mama sitting next to him, making sure he isn't too sick? How could they not get him help when he started acting ill?

It's just disgusting. That man needs a thorough thrashing and then a whole lot of therapy. I hope he never has another child.

153. The good Christian folks of Deeper Life Ministries
On Jan. 22, the skinny, underdeveloped 3-year-old went to sleep on a neighbor's deep-red couch while his parents studied Bible verses with friends from Deeper Life Ministries.

There is more blame to go around in here: the neighbor who didn't report the child's weakened condition, the good Christian folks of Deeper Life Ministries, the wife, and Ron senior and the equally crazy mother.

If we are to survive we will have to impose restrictions on religion. No more turning a blind eye to churches that teach homophobia, misogyny, or any version of "spare the rod, spoil the child." The Christian fundamentalists in this country have shown as the Islamic radicals have, that society must be protected from this poison. As Lenin warned in his 1905 essay on Socialism and religion:

Religion is one of the forms of spiritual oppression which everywhere weighs down heavily upon the masses of the people, over burdened by their perpetual work for others, by want and isolation. Impotence of the exploited classes in their struggle against the exploiters just as inevitably gives rise to the belief in a better life after death as impotence of the savage in his battle with nature gives rise to belief in gods, devils, miracles, and the like. Those who toil and live in want all their lives are taught by religion to be submissive and patient while here on earth, and to take comfort in the hope of a heavenly reward. But those who live by the labour of others are taught by religion to practise charity while on earth, thus offering them a very cheap way of justifying their entire existence as exploiters and selling them at a moderate price tickets to well-being in heaven. Religion is opium for the people. Religion is a sort of spiritual booze, in which the slaves of capital drown their human image, their demand for a life more or less worthy of man.

..cut

Nysheerah Paris told the court her husband had beaten the boy in the head several times and slammed his body against a kitchen wall in the month before the boy's death on Jan. 28. The woman, who is charged with child neglect and could face 15 years in prison if convicted, told the court her husband was jealous of the baby, complained about not having enough sex and told her not to hug her son because he thought it might make the boy grow up to be homosexual..

..more at link....

And the parents are religious wack jobs from this article....

The really sad part was yesterday article with the foster mother that raised the child for over two years. :( :( It talked about how much she missed him and how well he was doing in her home..

Did you read the reactions of his family members?

``Oh man,'' said his father, Ronald Paris Sr., as he finished a bag of Cheetos outside the courtroom. ``I raised my son in the right way. We played football, went fishing, went to wrestling matches, boxing, all that.''

Uh, obviously you didn't raise him right if he grew up to be a fundie child-killer.

Then they go on to say it was all the mother's fault.

It sickens me that I live on the same planet as filth like this.

149. Although these people do appear to be Fundamentalists
I don't know if that is exactly the cause of the father's hostility towards anything "feminine" in his son. There have always been men who have sought to be hypermasculine and make sure that their sons are that way too, regardless of their religiousness. There is an element in our culture that strongly disapproves of males having any feminine attributes. Look at coaches who insult their male players by calling them "girls". Look at parents who freak out if their son likes to play with "girl toys" or cross dress in play. Look at adults who think that there is something odd about men in certain professions like nursing. Look at Arnold and other "manly" Republicans who call our candidates "girly men". This man took this hypermasculinity to its sad extreme logical conclusion. His son was better off being dead than being anything less than hypermasculine.
