Union activists have vowed to disrupt First Group's annual meeting today accusing the company of riding roughshod over human rights in the US.
Workers from the US are expected to tell shareholders that while the business has normal relations with employees' representatives in the UK, it has adopted the "union-busting" tactics of the most reactionary companies in the US.
The allegations, denied by the company, centre on First Student, the subsidiary running yellow school buses in the US where managers are accused of intimidating activists, threatening workers with dismissal for joining the Service Employees International Union (SEIU) and driving down standards by invariably submitting the lowest tender price.
Andy Stern, the president of the SEIU, said the group was "speaking out of both sides of its mouth" - recognising unions in Britain, but operating a union ban in the US. He pointed out there had been a series of findings against First Group by the National Labor Relations Board which polices employment legislation.
