Dems Call for Bill on Security Clearance
WASHINGTON - Senate Democrats moved forcefully into the controversy surrounding White House aide Karl Rove on Thursday, calling for legislation to deny security clearances to officials who disclose the identity of an undercover agent.

Sen. Harry Reid (news, bio, voting record), D-Nev., sought to attach the proposal to a spending bill for the Department of Homeland Security, and aides said he hoped for a vote by day's end.

Reid, the Democratic leader, made his move as Republicans watched nervously to see whether the controversy over Rove's involvement in a news leak that exposed a CIA officer's identity would pose a credibility problem at the White House.

While the president passed up another chance Wednesday to directly voice confidence in his deputy chief of staff, his political team engineered a series of testimonials from members of Congress who praised Rove and condemned Democratic critics. And Bush's press secretary, Scott McClellan, told reporters the president has confidence in his longtime confidant.

2. republicans have a choice
they can vote for Reid's amendment, or they can vote to defend the right of people that disclose agents' identities to keep their security clearances.

7. Al read some crazy statement by Norm Coleman
about how the Democrats don't "have any ideas." I think this might be worth a call to his office. I can proffer this idea and see if he is giong to act on it.

8. Well that's a little bit late, isn't it ?
..."who discloses or has disclosed classified information, including the identity of a covert agent of the Central Intelligence Agency..."

10. I really like Ried
I don't always agree with him, but he is playing the politics better than any majority (or minority) leader in a long time.
