O'Connor Urged to Reconsider Retirement

By JESSE J. HOLLAND, Associated Press Writer 20 minutes ago

WASHINGTON - Four female senators called Thursday for retiring Supreme Court Justice
Sandra Day O'Connor to stay on the court and try for chief justice if the ailing
William Rehnquist steps down.

In a letter to O'Connor, Republicans Olympia Snowe and Susan Collins of Maine and Democrats Mary Landrieu of Louisiana and Barbara Boxer of California asked the nation's first female justice to consider staying on the high court if Chief Justice Rehnquist relinquishes the top spot.

Rehnquist was discharged Thursday after two nights in the hospital for treatment of a fever. O'Connor announced her retirement on July 1, but has made it conditional on a replacement being confirmed.

"We urge you to reconsider your resignation and return to the Supreme Court to serve as chief justice, should there be a vacancy," the senators said in the Thursday letter.

2. I hope this is true.
Better O'Connor until 2009 when we can replace her with a moderate. She'll do nicely for now.

4. Anyone think she will reconsider?
I wonder if the possibility of becoming chief justice would change her mind.

10. Doubt it - - this is more posturing by the Dems (& GOP moderates)
Praising O'Connor to try and frame the coming debate about any Supreme Court nominees as "Are they so far to the right that they upset the delicate balance of the Supreme Court"?

This is the same reason that Reid suggested a couple of Latino judges to Smirk - - to try and defuse the inevitable "Dems prove they really don't support Latinos and other minorities" spin that the RNC will issue about any Dem who votes against Smirk's first wing nut nominee, who will almost certainly be Latino. And if the Dems filibuster, the RNC will really pull out all the stops to make it look like a vote against the nominee is a vote against equality for Latinos.

5. Yeah, because she voted with the majority in Bush v Gore
The ruling that was so bogus they wrote into it that it could never be used as a precedent for any other ruling. That's definitely the kind of centrist, non-partisan legal mind we want at in the big Chief Justice chair alright...

I know that the strategy behind this is to kill time - - try and get O'Connor to stay on long enough so that a Dem President can nominate a replacement, because anybody Smirk nominates will be worse... but - - HELLO - - O'Connor waited to retire until a Republican could nominate her replacement.

Sorry, I am just sick to my bones that the Dem party machine acts like Bush v Gore never took place...

7. Hopefully she has a conscience
and will take into consideration that she was 1/5 of the problem and the reason why we have * in office today.

Hope hope hope

12. That hope and $2.00 will get you a cup of coffee
Until she gives a speech apologizing for the ruling, or writes a book apologizing for it, there's no reason to assume she regrets her ruling.

9. She waited for the Chimperor's second term ...
... because the obvious prostitution of resigning during his COTUS-edicted first term would've been abhorrent. In waiting, she's as much as admitted she knows he was illegitimate.

14. Sandra Dull O'Connor
The expected MSM resignation praise of O'Connor was expected. She carried water for Bush when called.
