San Diego Mayor Quits in Midst of Scandal

SAN DIEGO (AP) - Mayor Dick Murphy packed his belongings and bid farewell to his staff Friday, ending a rocky 4-year tenure that was cut short when he resigned amid a wave of scandal.

``This is a day of sadness, but you know, this really ought to be a day of pride,'' he told about two dozen employees at his last staff meeting.

A few employees wiped away tears but the mild-mannered Republican mayor appeared relaxed on what he called a bittersweet day. Murphy concluded his remarks by saying, ``Thank you, God bless you and goodbye.''

Eight months after being re-elected, Murphy is resigning in the midst of a federal probe of San Diego's deficit-ridden pension fund and with a federal jury deciding the fate of two councilmen accused of corruption.

1. Re-elected? HOGWASH.
Only because they ignored the spirit of the law and didn't let Donna Frye take office to begin with. I can't feel the least bit sorry for anyone who would take office under those circumstances.

4. This time around she has a very good chance of winning though.
If she can win as a write-in candidate, she can definately kick ass as an actual candidate.

2. The city should bring back roger hedgecock
Oh, I forgot, another republican who resigned as Mayor of San Diego amidst scandal and perjury. Now he makes a living by telling lies for limbaugh when limbaugh is on vacation, or on drugs.

16. Not really it involved a recall election which was ostensibly won by the
liberal challenger Fry but many voters forgot to put a circle on the ballot after writing her name in. The registrar disallowed all these ballots.

7. What's up with Zucchet?
He's acting Mayor now? He's a Dem and an environmentalist it would seem, but he's got legal troubles too?

"But Zucchet would be forced to relinquish public office if a jury convicts him of taking illegal campaign contributions from a strip-club owner. A federal jury began deliberating the case Wednesday."

10. Zucchet and Ralph Insunza are in deep yogurt
Strippergate. A third city council member, Charles Lewis, was also under investigation but died before indictments were issued.

12. why do they always throw that gratuitous
"god bless you" crap. If they had any belief in god, they certainly wouldn't act in the manner that they do.
Good riddance to bad rubbish.

13. That's what San Diego gets for a string of Republican mayors. Including
Wilson, Golding, Hedgecock and Murphy. O'Connor at least made the city habitable for everyone. San Diego will never get a decent city government until it gets a real liberal media-including that rag the Union-Tribune.

18. The Voice of San Diego isn't too bad a media site...
Don't have a hard copy paper, but they seem to have a refreshing more progressive viewpoint.

22. The dirt on the Reader's Publisher...
He's an extreme right wing anti-abortion activist, anti homosexuality supporter. His name is Jim Holman and he also publishes a over-the-top right-minded "catholic" newspaper called "San Diego News Notes". Any catholics I know, and the San Diego diocese has nothing to do with him. A good alternative paper for san diego is San Diego City Beat, available in print all over the city. There used to be a decent one called Farenheit but the Reader made sure that Farenheit would have blank advertiser list if you know what I mean.

21. What is with the Republicans and the goddamn pension funds???
They're worse than Jimmy Hoffa era mafioso.

It's like they rob you your whole life by exploiting your surplus labor, then rob your fucking pension too. Social Security is the big pension fund robbing prize for these pricks. Jesus on a pogo-stick, they're slimeballs.

23. the pension fund scandal goes back to 1996'ish
Around the time the GOP convention was here in San Diego - but both democrats and republicans have had a hand in its defecit. The mayor is a bit more than a figurehead here in san diego (or rather, was, until a recent ballot measure giving the mayor more power passed). The most recent blame for failing to act falls on both the fund trustees appointed and the mixed dem/repub city council. The DOJ is looking into criminal activity by the pension trustees, and the city attorney has already filed criminal charges against some of them.
