Memo to Mehlman Interviewers: RNC Chair Tells the Same Lies Over and Over About Rove Controversy

----------------
WASHINGTON, July 15 /U.S. Newswire/ -- In recent media appearances, Republican National Committee (RNC) chairman Ken Mehlman has issued numerous distortions and falsehoods regarding allegations of White House senior adviser Karl Rove's involvement in the outing of CIA operative Valerie Plame. Cable news hosts Wolf Blitzer and Chris Matthews failed to question Mehlman's various falsehoods, allowing him to misinform unchallenged and at length. Media Matters for America offers the following breakdown of Mehlman's lies, and the facts that rebut them.

Mehlman is scheduled to appear on the July 17 editions of NBC's Meet the Press and CNN's Late Edition with Wolf Blitzer.

Lie no. 1: Wilson falsely claimed Cheney sent him to Niger

In an attack on the credibility of former ambassador Joseph C. Wilson IV, Plame's husband, Mehlman twice claimed that it was Vice President Dick Cheney who sent him to Niger in 2002 to investigate a rumored sale of yellowcake uranium to Iraq. As Media Matters for America noted, Wilson claimed the CIA -- not Cheney -- sent him to Africa. In his July 6, 2003, New York Times op-ed, and in an August 3, 2003, interview on CNN's Late Edition with Wolf Blitzer, Wilson noted that the CIA sent him to Niger to investigate a question from Cheney's office about the uranium issue. The RNC cropped and twisted quotes from the Times op-ed and the CNN interview to back up this false talking point. From Mehlman's July 12 appearance on CNN's Wolf Blitzer Reports:

MEHLMAN: Karl was right; Joe Wilson was wrong. The story was false. It was based on a false premise, and, of course, the conclusion was false. (...) What Joe Wilson alleged was that the vice president, then he said the CIA director, sent him to Niger.

8. I sent Media Matters a letter asking them to do something like this
I was felling really down about all the lies the Right was shoving down everyones throat and went to Media Matters and saw they were debunking everything. I got to thinking that probably not that many people actually look at their website and then wrote them a letter asking them if they sent their findings out to the media outlets that were letting Mehlman get away with this crap.

Perhaps my letter had an impact.

Have they ever done this before?

12. Kenny Mehlman, self-loathing homo
How come nobody has outed this prick? Supposedly it's well known around the press core, but no one will touch it.
No balls anywhere, the "big" journalists just let them walk over them like so much s***
I'm gay and grey and this makes me puke.
These repugs make me puke.

18. I think this abuse of the press has really pissed them off. First,
Rather, and now, Miller sits in jail. Scotty won't answer any questions. They're done. Nothing else to do but start looking at the truth and the record.

14. Are we really surprised at the GOP response?
The fact that so many of the GOP are supporting Rove and even Tom Delay is that they are resting on their laurels. They can pull the rabbit out of the hat at any time - they are in firm control of the executive, judicial, legislative branch of this government(and whatever shadow government that is creeping about about waiting for 'the time'). I have a feeling they think they are untouchable. Fitz will disappear and they will launch a terror attack here to take peoples' minds of the whole scenario. Hate to sound so pessimistic at this stage. WE have to push harder! We need to blast TV with ads, put fliers out to every constituent. Posters, billboards!

21. Funny thing...
... people tend to forget that when there's trouble, the RNC chairman tends to lie with abandon. It's been a long time, so I wouldn't expect many people to remember, but George H.W. Bush told more than his share of whoppers and half-truths when he was RNC chairman at the same time that Watergate was going down.

Bush's credibility was so bad by the time Watergate was over that Ford yanked him and installed Mary Louise Smith. If people then had challenged his credibility more thoroughly, we might have been spared twelve years of him as VP and Pres.

22. They must be giddy with the amount of spin they are creating at the moment
At the end of the day, it doesn't mean a rats ass how the RNC try to spin this, or how the MSM try to distort this issue, what matters is what Special counsel Patrick Fitzgerald thinks and whether or not he thinks there is a case to answer. If there is, some serious questions are going to be asked of the MSM and how they have portrayed this whole scandal

24. It's very telling
Edited on Sat Jul-16-05 11:58 AM by jurassicpork
not to mention downright suspicious, that everyone in the GOP are all saying the same things at the same time. The number of leaks that have sprung from the WH is amazing. Even conservative assclown Joe Scarborough is piling on, falling back on the tired but true tactic of smearing Wilson's name on his show while Congressman Pete King is calling for several people who mentioned Plame's name to be shot... while saying that Rove "deserves a medal" for what he did. Thank God for talking points and how they get everyone on the same page in a hurry.

The DSM IV would prove that virtually everyone on the far right is completely insane in one spectacular way or another.
