Hicks' handling 'beyond a joke' (Australian held in Gitmo)

THE Federal Opposition has attacked the Federal Government for its handling of accused Australian terrorist David Hicks, saying it is now "beyond a joke".

Opposition Foreign Affairs spokesman Kevin Rudd has called on Prime Minister John Howard to put pressure on the United States to ensure Hicks gets a fair trial.

"He's the one who maintains that he has the most close relationship with Washington of anybody else; well it's time he resolved this matter once and for all," Mr Rudd said.

"We have no truck whatsoever with terrorists but we are also of the view that any person is entitled to the presumption of innocence before the courts and are entitled to a fair trial," he said.
