Study suggests link between eating red meat and Crohn's disease
Study suggests link between eating red meat and Crohn's disease

James Meikle, health correspondent
Saturday July 16, 2005
The Guardian

Scientists have been asked to investigate a possible link between eating meat and Crohn's disease, a debilitating illness affecting 100,000 Britons.

A study of the diets and lifestyles of 218 patients has revealed a statistical association with eating beef or canned meat such as corned beef.

...The Food Standards Agency is asking its food safety advisers to consider what research may be necessary to establish more firmly whether there is a link.

Last month, a study revealed those who ate two portions of red meat a day had a 35% greater risk of developing bowel cancer than those who ate one portion a week.

1. Great, now they tell me. I've had Crohn's since 1984.
I didn't develop it until I went back to eating meat after 7 years as a vegetarian.

2. I have Crohn's
and have never been a big red meat eater. As a matter of fact, I'm in the middle of a flare-up and haven't eaten red meat in 3 weeks! It's also been traced to the same gene as psoriasis, and that explanation makes more sense to me, since that runs in my family.

4. They aren't saying it's the ONLY factor, just possibly A factor.
Like many diseases, there are many different factors that come into play. Obesity is a factor in diabetes risk, but so is genetic predisposition.

5. my husband has crohns and he has been able to control it well
by limiting red meat in his diet, as well as processed foods, white flour, white bread, sugar, citric foods, dairy products and grapes, of all things. We read the book, "Eat Right for Your Blood Type" a couple of years ago and some of the theories there make alot of sense. My husband is a type A and should only be eating fish, chicken, and a largely vegetarian based diet.
I on the other hand am type O and should be eating red meat and little to no dairy products and regular wheat products. Kinda weird but I feel better when I eat red meat. He doesn't. Whatever, I guess.

9. I have been able to control it with cutting down on stress, eating
low on the food chain. I use meat as a flavoring, not as the focus.

11. That's interesting, and I'm type O Neg. Can you link me with something?
I'd like to read more about it. And my husband and kids are all O neg as well. I think it is possible given that certain blood types are more prone to ulcers, etc.

I have only a modest tolerance (or even preference) for dairy. A huge bowl of ice cream sends me to the bathroom and cramps me and adds weight like crazy, but my oldest child seems to be fine on it. I consumed only minimal dairy when I was nursing the boys, though, as they seemed colicky if I overdid it. I think it was the cows' milk protein.

What do you mean by "regular" meat products? (Me too?)

Is it possible you husband has celiac disease?

13. our family has a problem with double-infammation genes
autoimmune problems show up in different ways. We seem to 'rev up' with high glycemic diets...definitely wheat and sugar are a problem.

As a rule...anyone with autoimmune reactions, like my family, has to realize we're being attacked from many different sources. Environmental toxins are the worst and more difficult to control. The govt isn't acknowledging this, so we're left holding that bag.

Drug companies and USGovt have been forcing us into taking vaccinations which can be deadly to the likes in my family. Today, each child will be introduced to 55 different antigens by the time they are 6 mos old...AND 95 antigens by the time they are 5 yrs old. Baby boomers were given approx. 35 antigens...but for my famiy, even that much is triggering our immune response too easily.

One thing I strongly recommend is getting a GENOME TEST at Smokey Mountain Laboratories(confidential). See if you have the double-inflammation gene.

OH...Now we have runaway corporate polluters and a govt which throws the cost back onto the tax payers for all the corporate crimina wrong doings...here's a link I think you should read and ponder:

NOTE: how the article is published from Austrailia? But these were genuine US Studies?

3. I've got it as well
and have found I feel much better if I avoid red meat altogether. Not hard for me, as I don't care for it, anyway.

Interesting...

8. Just to be on the safe side,
everyone should try to avoid red meat as much as possible. We've all read the threads about the undisclosed 'Mad Cow' cases in the US. I suspect there are other cases, but the beef industry is keeping a lid on it.......so far.

Do like we do: buy Garden Burgers in the frozen food section. Boca Burgers, fake hot dogs, even "facon" (fake bacon). It tastes great. I want to stay healthy so I can enjoy watching Bush's demise.

Stay healthy, DU:ers. You're sorely needed to keep up the fight.

12. Look at your life style, look at how you eat and what exercise you get
Look at your health and maybe you see a connection maybe you don't.

Everyone has some kind of feeling about their health and what if any disease they have and it's cause and effect.

Me I eat only fruits and vegetables and a little cheese. I wouldn't think of eating any kind of flesh food and I am disease free. I walk the hills where I live as exercise and do a bit of yoga and some weight training. But that's the decision I make for me and not for anyone else.

I believe you should eat mostly fruits and vegetables, beans, pasta, grain, nuts. Exercise regularly. Love someone unconditionally. Be an ethical person. Develop your spirituality. Meditate, relax and again that's me.

I don't pay much attention to what ever comes out about this or that.

14. do you have children?
it feels like our culture doesnt support raising children in this way. Also, this life style of yours feels right but it feels like you're not deaing with the world like most of us. That is not a judgement...it's just pointing out that this life style woud be easier without a lot of streses...do you live in Vermont or something?
