National Guard Troubles Concern Governors

By ROBERT TANNER
The Associated Press
Saturday, July 16, 2005; 4:40 PM

DES MOINES, Iowa -- The nation's governors voiced sharp worries Saturday for the National Guard troops they share with the federal government, with concerns about recruitment targets, benefits and job prospects.

Ark. Gov. Mike Huckabee, incoming chairman of the National Governors Association, said more attention must be paid to the needs of Guardsmen returning from overseas deployments, especially younger Guard members who need to find work.

More than 30 governors gathered here for their summer meeting.

Both Democrats and Republicans said changes caused by the huge demands placed on the Guard and Reserves for the war in Iraq need more examination.

1. They're just now
noticing? Or do they just now have a platform to voice it?

I can imagine what the Democratic governors think who were against this Attack On Iraq..if there are any?

8. With summer it's forest fire season in my state, Washington.
The guard is often part of our defense against these. Instead they're fighting fires of a defferent kind in Iraq

11. Also the Worst Hurricane Season in Living Memory
That would be last year, but this year will almost certainly beat it.
Two category 4 Hurricanes in the first half of July?? We've never had ANY this early before.
I wish the residents of the affected regions of Florida the best
in the efforts to rebuild from Dennis, Emily could hit Texas,
and the hurricane season is only a few weeks old.

I read the Florida was able to call up some National Guardsmen
to help with Dennis. Most are probably between deployments to
Iraq and trying to recover. I hope everyone will be OK.

The hurricane season has 3 1/2 more months to go.
At this rate they will run out of names for them.

12. Time to start replacing the national guard with state militias

and pass local state laws that those kids signing up for the state militias cannot be used in overseas wars and are not required to register for the draft should one come up. Start "empowering" the states (especially California and the west coast and the eastern seaboard! Start building up a new set of armed forces we might need for a defense if we get to the point of having to pass a set of secession propositions too!

hurricans, etc.

Bu$h doesn't give a DAMN!

Only taking over Iraq Oil counts, didn't you know. The U$ can sell it to China to benefit the upper 1 to 5%. They are the only ones that matter. Didn't you know. Read Kevin Phillips: Wealth and Democracy and Howard Zinn: The People's History of the United States.
