BAGHDAD (Reuters) - A U.S. soldier was killed and one wounded when their Bradley fighting vehicle struck a land mine near the town of Bayji in northern Iraq (news - web sites) on Sunday night, a U.S. military spokesman said.

"The Bradley struck a land mine. It could have been put there minutes before or hours before," Major Gordon Tate told Reuters in fugitive Iraqi leader Saddam Hussein (news - web sites)'s home town of Tikrit.


Sunday's attack brought to 95 the number of U.S. soldiers killed in action in Iraq since President Bush (news - web sites) declared major combat over on May 1.

I read somewhere that there are suspicions that the depression that led to suicides may have been triggered by some of the vaccinations the GIs were given.

You must have noticed that the number of wounded is given but NOT what the wounds are, no tally of how many legs and arms amputated, how many blinded, how many hit in the groin. WHY isn't this to be found someplace?

I beg to differ, but placing an explosive in a roadway that is used by US forces is an attack by any definition. Too bad if it's not dramatic enough for you, but equally deadly. I'm not sure why you think this mine was from a previous war.

20. I read the news today, oh boy...

more deaths. We have no idea how many of the wounded have suffered amputations, blinding, other hideous, devastating injuries. Even those who make it back without obvious physical trauma will carry deep psychic scars. The Bush administration has already pretty much broadcast it's intention of screwing the vets out of any medical benefits they might be mistakenly be thinking they are entitled to.

What about the pain and suffering of the Iraqui people? The one in the story from a couple of days ago, where his entire orchard was bulldozed by our troops as punishment for not turning resistance fighters in...his source of livlihood is gone. I admit to complete ignorance of their culture, but from what I've been able to tell, they are a very proud people. I would imagine that such an act does more than destroy trees, it must also insult his pride, his ability to provide for his family.

The suffering on both sides is horrific, and the blame rests with Bush, and his arrogant insistance on having this war under any pretext, simply because he wanted it. My heart is breaking for all of them, from our soldiers to the Iraqui people. What incredible waste, brought about by one miserable excuse for a human being.
