Schwarzenegger Unveils Energy Plans
The governor-elect's initial policy relies on a mix of free markets, conservation and green power sources.

Gov.-elect Arnold Schwarzenegger, who saw his predecessor undone by California's electricity debacle, is engaged in his own high-wire act, offering an energy plan designed for both ends of the political spectrum.

Schwarzenegger's preliminary proposal takes a Republican-style reliance on free markets, which became decidedly unpopular in the energy crisis of 2000-2001, and mixes in such traditionally liberal favorites as aggressive conservation and increased use of green energy.

Within two years, for example, he wants half of all new homes built in California to be equipped with solar cells.

This blend of ideas is perhaps not surprising for a centrist Republican accustomed to peacefully coexisting with the fiercely Democratic Kennedy clan. Still, as campaign rhetoric morphs into governance plans, energy experts warn that the Schwarzenegger vision may be a tough sell to a Legislature dominated by Democrats and independent commissions packed with appointees of Gov. Gray Davis.

I guess I mean if they had the money, It is also costly to ad these things to a home. It is not something to over look in a sunny place. It is not to easy to live in a home like that. I lived in one half in ground and heated by sun in Maine. Electic heat was added at one time then cut off. We had a monotor and wood stove. It was an act of God to get that house to feel right. Oil was cheap and so was wood.You also need a lot of fans. I am not sure we saved on light bills but on oil and wood we did. You also took very fast baths etc. Hard to get heat into an off room. I must say I missed the windows on one side of house.Now I live in Maine and my apt is heated by the sun a great deal as windows and sky lights face South. My heat just does not come on all day when the sun is out.Omce more you must run fans. Since my lights are in my rent I am not sure if it is high.We tend to look at heat and not lights I think, in Maine. I think it is motor things that runs up the light bills.

Looks like Palast was right on the money when he specifically warned about this before the election. People were too mesmerized by "authoritarian image worship" to pay attention. The legislature should pass a resolution of support for the litigation and Bustamente should pick up the mantle and press ahead with the suit in his capacity as Lieutenant Governor. Force Kenny Boy's puppet to show his true hand by opposing it as his masters desire.

14. Exact opposite of my approach.

We need to fully re-regulate energy and use the state to build and operate all types of power generation facilities--including nuclear. I agree neither with this plan's "ecologism" not with its "free market" idiocy.

In an effort to tap yet another public market for the robber barons, Arnold presents a new water plan to Kahl I forn I A. By selling the water services for a nominal $1 to for profit entities, Schwartzenagger projected the State can save 2.2 billion annually in salaries and maintenance.

Ken Lay, of Enron corporation, a company expected to assume control of much of the California water supply said that water rates were kept artificially low under state subsidies and Californians can expect a tripling of rates in the first year, with annual increases for the next five years to bring the water systems to profitability by 2010.

Lay also noted that Californians have shown no interest in conservation of water, so the Corp will start rationing of water immediatley. Lay plans no upgrades to the water system in the nesxt decade, noting that, again, "the system is so underfunded that until we can get the rates to a point where the shareholders of Enron are receiving a respectable double digit ROI, we can't even consider infrastructure investment."

There are already more than enough laws on the books in CALIFORNIA to make going solar a viable option. One thing one might also note the space above many residential property is lost space that could be used very strategically. The way some of it starting to pan out is the gold comes from the sunshine

23. Now, see...here's where I have a small problem.

I LIKE the solar cell on houses deal. I think if Al Gore had said that, I'd be singing his praises. I know this Cal deal is a ripoff, but when life deals you lemons, you should make lemonade. Let's see if Californians take a paper suggestion and can hold him to it. If he does it, a great step forward will have been taken. If he doesn't follow through, people start looking for a way to make it happen.

We should support good ideas, if not the messenger.
