Member of Iraq Constitution Panel Killed
Member of Iraq Constitution Panel Killed

By SAMEER N. YACOUB

BAGHDAD, Iraq - One of the Sunni Arabs appointed to a committee to draft Iraq's constitution was assassinated Tuesday in a drive-by shooting, an Iraqi official said.

Mijbil Issa was gunned down, along with two bodyguards, in the Karradah area of Baghdad, according to Mohammed Abed-Rabbou, a Sunni member of the drafting committee.

Issa was among 15 Sunnis named last month to a committee charged with drafting a new constitution by Aug. 15. The Sunnis were added in an attempt to reach out to the religious community that provides the heart of the insurgency.

However, two Sunni committee members had already quit because of threats from the insurgents who oppose the U.S.-backed, Shiite dominated government.

4. Does anyone doubt
that the Shiite government will do anything to make sure the Sunnis don't have a piece of the action in drafting a constitution? This is Bush's democracy in action.

9. Sunnis on Iraq's constitution committee shot dead
BAGHDAD (Reuters) - Gunmen shot dead three Sunni Arab members of the team drafting Iraq's new constitution on Tuesday, striking a blow against the body seen as the best hope for providing a political end to the insurgency.

Drawing Sunni Arabs on to the committee, due to deliver a new constitution by Aug 15, was the cornerstone of the U.S.-backed strategy of persuading members of the restive minority to move off the streets and into peaceful politics.

Sheikh Mujbil al-Sheikh Isa, Aziz Ibrahim and Dhamin Hussein Ileywi were shot as they left a restaurant in Baghdad's central Karrada district, a police source said.

11. A devastating blow in Iraq
First, it sends the message to other Sunnis working in the new system that their cooperation is being watched and is not encouraged. Second, the new system that is laboring to be born in Iraq cannot keep its proponents safe. Third, the "death throes" of the resistance don't look to be abating any time soon.

This murder was accomplished without suicide bombing, boldly carried out by gunmen with little fear of immediate reprisal.

14. But completely predictable, and in fact, predicted by many of us
The insurgency views them all as collaborators. One by one, they'll be picked off. Step out of the Republic of the Green Zone and BAM.

13. Anyone considered to be a quisling by the Resistance must
know that they are a target. If they didn't know before, they know now...
