Poll: Public Sees Bush As Less Trustworthy
WASHINGTON -- Americans have growing doubts about President Bush's honesty and his effectiveness, according to a poll taken at a time people are uneasy with the war in Iraq, uncertain about the economy and nervous about the terrorist threat.

Half of those in the poll taken by the Pew Research Center, 49 percent, said they believe the president is trustworthy, while almost as many, 46 percent said he is not. Bush was at 62 percent on this measure in a September 2003 Pew poll and at 56 percent in a Gallup poll in April. One of Bush's strong suits throughout his presidency has been the perception by a majority of people that he is honest.

The slide in trust in Bush comes at a time the White House is answering questions about top aide Karl Rove's involvement in the public leak of the identity of a CIA operative.

30. Bush presidency is going down the tubes - no recovery on this one
Iraq is at it's worst shape, SS. and the list is too long to mention, a character like Bush can only end with a legacy that includes the word impeachment. Rovegate and DSM will take care of this administration - all Fitzgerald has to do is connect the bloody dots!

21. that tells me that 49% of the people are extremely gullible....
If an adult can't see through Bush's weak act after two fixed elections, two illegal invasions, and 5 years of his actions being the direct opposite of his words, then that adult is way beyond gullible, they are fucking stupid.

14. 71% of repugs think R*should be fired, 17% don't. [from kos]
Should Karl Rove Be Fired If He Leaked Classified Information?
Yes No
All 75% 15%
Republicans 71 17
Independents 74 17
Democrats 83 12

Skepticism about the administration's cooperation has jumped. As the initial investigation began in September 2003, nearly half the public, 47 percent, believed the White House was fully cooperating. That fell to 39 percent a few weeks later, and it's lower still, 25 percent, in this new ABC News poll.

This view is highly partisan; barely over a tenth of Democrats and just a quarter of independents think the White House is fully cooperating. That grows to 47 percent of Republicans -- much higher, but still under half in the president's own party. And doubt about the administration's cooperation has grown as much among Republicans -- by 22 points since September 2003 -- as it has among others.

These results mean two things -- first of all, the efforts by the GOP and their allies to muddy the waters and turn this into a partisan issue are failing.

Second, this illustrates a growing disconnect between the GOP elite and the rest of the country. While the party leadership, conservative punditry and wingnutophere place the elephant above the stars and stripes (see last night's rant), it's clear that the vast majority of the Americans still place their country first. And that thankfully goes for the Republican rank and file.

Most people -- Red, Blue, or Independent -- still know the difference between right and wrong, and aren't willing to let partisanship cloud their judgment.

18. Well Frickin' DUH!!!!

Geez, what took these people so long???

Anyone who managed to drag their lazy ass of the couch and do some research into Bush's past (as Gov of Texas and prior) would have seen that he wasn't trustworthy (or qualified to run the country) BEFORE he became president and f--ked up the country.

I'll bet the average American spends more time researching which car they're going to buy than they do researching the person they're going to vote for to run the country.

Sad, so sad.

27. 49% - bet they over-sampled republicans again.
Checked Pew's site, no direct breakdown of party polled, unless I missed it.
http://people-press.org/reports/display.php3?PageID=976
The number describing Bush as trustworthy has fallen 13 points over the same period, and there are indications that the Rove controversy is contributing to the president's lower rating in this area. An analysis of the data shows that those who believe that Rove has committed a serious offense are somewhat less likely than others to view Bush as trustworthy, even taking account of such factors as partisanship and opinions on Bush's job performance.

Perceptions of Bush's character also have become much more partisan. Just 28% of Democrats say Bush is able to get things done, only about half the number who said that in September 2003 (55%).

But independents also have grown more skeptical of Bush's effectiveness. Currently, fewer than half of independents (45%) say they believe Bush can get things done, down from 67% in September 2003. Independents are much more critical of Bush in other areas as well. Only about half of independents (48%) view Bush as a strong leader, compared with 72% two years ago. Bush's rating for trustworthiness among independents has suffered a comparable decline. About four-in-ten (38%) say he is trustworthy, a decline of 21 percentage points from September 2003.

Republicans continue to express highly positive opinions of Bush's character and effectiveness. Bush gets his highest ratings among Republicans for trustworthiness (88%), leadership (87%), warmth (86%) and empathy (86%). Democrats have soured on Bush across the board; positive ratings range from a high of 37% (for warmth) to a low of 20% (for personal empathy).
